Will I have any functionality at all with Genie 2028?

I received the MyQ as a gift. I've seen many posts and Amazon reviews that mention MyQ is not compatible with my Genie 2028. I understand this.

However, I did see a review that mentioned that MyQ is able to monitor Genie 2028 doors, but it cannot open/close them. That would be okay with me; I care more about the ability to monitor the door status via the app, than the ability to control the doors.

Can anyone confirm this? If it can at least monitor the doors, I will install it. If not, I will have to give it away. The smart controller Genie makes requires hard wiring, which I have no interest in doing.

Thanks in advance.

Shalin, to set your Genie up with MyQ for its monitoring capabilities, follow these steps: install the hub (connect to Wi-Fi), create a MyQ account, add the hub to MyQ account, add a garage door opener, add the sensor, then stop (do not try to learn the garage door opener). Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Chuck

Hi Tuan,

We checked on this for you and that model is not compatible with the smart garage hub.

Dear Chamberlain rep,

We are looking for some clarification on your comments. I realize that the MyQ is NOT fully compatible with the Genie 2028.

However, some people online have stated that the MyQ would be able to monitor the doors, but wouldn't be able to open/close them. In other words, it could tell you the door is open but you would have to close it on your own.

A few months ago in this thread, MyQ employee Chuck said this was correct, and gave instructions above. But now, a Chamberlain rep is saying it's not compatible.

Can you clarify whether it can monitor the doors or not? I'm just looking for monitoring ability. Thanks!

I have a 2028 Genie and just today I setup the Hub with the Bridge .... it all works. Hub was made April 2019.
I must say I spent about 2 hours setting it up and it was the most unintuitive piece of tech I've setup in a long time. Wouldn't want to set it up again.
The guided App setup is terrible as it assumes you're setting up multiple sensors etc ... and I wasn't. If you dont complete the guide, the device doesn't appear in the App.

Integrating with the Bridge was even worse. I ended up resetting the Hub multiple times before I got it to hand off the Hub to the Bridge. This is really not user friendly. I just hope neither device dies anytime soon.

P.S. To pair your 2028 genie with the Hub, press and hold the program button until you see a purple light and then wait about 30-60 seconds. Make sure your garage door is open when youre pairing.
