Open Letter to the MyQ Community

To the MyQ Community:

Hello! I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Kylie and I work directly for Chamberlain’s marketing and product teams where safety, security, product quality, and customers are our top priorities. The former community Manager is no longer with our company and I will help communicate with the MyQ Community moving forward.

I’ve taken time to review the questions and comments that have been posted over the past few months. Thank you so much for your feedback, ideas and, yes, even constructive criticism. The Community was developed to have open discussions around the topics that matter most to all of you. To make sure that your feedback is heard, I will be compiling your ideas and suggestions into a monthly report for our management team to review. We believe that our customers have some really awesome ideas and we want to make sure that they are given the attention they deserve.

Going in and out of the garage is often an afterthought for the average person, but at Chamberlain, we don’t see it that way. Your garage is where you keep your car, where you store your prized possessions, where your family members and pets enter and exit the home multiple times a day, every day. It’s the gateway to everything that matters most to you.

Our mission is to bring you an awesome MyQ experience, and so safety, security, product quality and customer experience drive all of our product decisions. That’s true for all our products, including MyQ. We also realize, however, that many feel frustrated that we haven’t provided a firm date regarding several of our products and partnership integrations.

Here’s why. The products we develop must work in an environment that is complex, ever-changing, and -- frankly -- not always under our control. Third parties (like automobile companies, smart phone manufacturers and others) have their own standards and we often need to accommodate them all or develop new technological adaptations. With all that going on, it's difficult to provide firm dates because there's so much development that goes into our products. The industry’s changing landscape drives the extensive amount of QA testing that we put our products through. New opportunities and challenges are presented every day. We evaluate and address every issue we can identify before releasing our products to market. Our customers are our top priority, so we feel that protecting a major access point (the garage) to their home requires that type of scrutiny and attention to detail.

We always work hard to stay on track with our product schedules, but  Chamberlain, like any company that really cares about its customers, is willing to adjust a deadline to ensure your and your families’ safety and security.  We balance the importance of releasing top-of-the-line technology with your overall experience.

I’d like to ask and thank you for your patience while we work hard to develop our products. I personally assure you the moment I can provide dates for any product updates and partner integrations, I will let the MyQ Community know.

Thank you,

Kylie

Any chance that your programmers can utilize this so that we can have Siri open and close our garage doors?

Cool stuff, but definitely not needed.  Projects like homebridge wouldn't have existed for as long as they have if this was needed.

The bottom line here is Chamberlain has been making promises for a year and a half about an integration that's not all that difficult to achieve.  Perhaps they should contract-hire a couple of coders that are doing node.js and/or Python apps to do this integration.

dotinc very nicepost, who said Homekit does not work, use Google, many have worked around MyQ, I am a PC guy, and I worked around Chamberlain.

I just laugh at the SNAFU this whole company is in. For the guys who can't work around it, well that's funny, so many have.

And your right SECURITY is VERY important. Do you have WINDOWS (the glass kind) in your house? Do you have DOORS in your home? Do you have Fox Police Locks ? If not your house is not secure, and people break in houses all the time. The Garage is the last place the average burglar is coming through. WINDOWS and DOORS, easy to get through. Just Google ATM stolen, and see how inventive some people are with tow trucks, vans, cars, forklifts, electronic control of a garage door is the least likely thing to worry about.

They shut down SmartThings ? why their computers could not handle the volume, really that's what they said.

As I said SNAFU, or better yet a CUSTERF$%K

Hi JD,

There is no new information to share at this time. I could tell you what I've already told you, but I think redundancy can be quite a bore. As I have promised, when I have anything new, I'll share it here immediately. :)

Best,

Kylie

MyQ technology makes the model very easy to sync with your phone. Just download an app, and you get all the extra controls. Then you have two separate remote controls. Even when there’s no one else in the house. This system works best when you need to get out of the house in a hurry. The wireless keypad takes care of the security by simply following a pin.

With the latest app update I thought I'd experiment a little and set up a new alert. I set an alert to notify me via push alert if the door was open for more than one minute every day at 8:45am to 8:46am. Sure enough it failed to do that.

I tried doing another alert as you suggested and just like before it does not alert me. I get an alert anytime the door opens or closes, but not if I tell it to alert me if it is open for a specific amount of time (1 minute) in a particular time period (2pm to 2:30pm).

Can anyone confirm that I'm doing something wrong, or is this really a bug?

As you can see from the attached images I have set an alert to occur every evening starting at 8:30pm until 11:59pm if the garage door is open for more than 5 minutes.  This alert does not come up on my phone.  I set this up 2 weeks ago and it is not working.

Thanks for any help.

Tom - Just a quick update - i set mine up to match yours, with the only change being the time - 7:00 Am to 8:30 Am and i had the alert work with no issues - try setting the alert type to email - just to rule that side of it out.

Okay, I went in and created an alert to let me know if the garage door is closed between 7:00pm and 7:59pm for longer than 5 minutes.  It works, but only if the garage door is closed in that time frame does it tell me that the door has remained closed.  If it is closed before 7:00pm and remains closed until 8:00pm, it does not alert me, ever.

Edit:  Oh, and I have it send me a notification and an e-mail.

Kylie, Sorry about my original comment, that was in poor taste.  I'm sure you understand that what you are seeing here is frustration brought on by a lack of communication and transparency from Chamberlain.  It puts you in a very awkward position.  It also shines a negative light on Chamberlain.  I understand how Apple works to some degree.  Conforming to their policies on can be frustrating to say the least.  I don't know what the hold up is with the homelink solution, but at this point, chamberlain would probably be better off to say that Apple has required us to make extensive changes in our system that are delaying the integration with homelink.  At this time we have integration with Nest (and I think Wink), and are going to focus on those going forward until our development team has time to implement the changes Apple is requiring.  Something like that would at least tell people stop asking, and here are some alternatives.  It would hopefully relieve some of the frustration in this group.

I definitely feel ya there, Chip. Believe me, I'll be doing cartwheels out of excitement as soon as I'm cleared to share more updates from us. Just know that I'm directly involved with our HomeKit efforts here and Im always reporting back what our MyQ Community is saying...the good, the bad, even the ugly.

@Chip, homelink and HomeKit are two very different things. Homelink is Liftmaster's counterpart (actually, for the most part it's one in the same as MyQ since LiftMaster and Chamberlain are one in the same) which has been reverse engineered and used as a backdoor along with an arduino microcomputer to circumvent this waiting game with MyQ to provide a limited hack for HomeKit integration. It's far from a simple hack, and personally if I was going to go as far as incorporating an arduino into a solution I would take Homelink and/or MyQ completely out of the equation anyway. The obfuscation between the two has led to plenty of additional confusion and conflict in this and other threads. I'm not sure if you just "miss-spoke" or didn't realize that there's is a huge difference between the two.

I'm sorry I did misspeak.  I meant homekit.  I bought a wink hub last night and it was easy to tie in both of my MYQ doors.  This morning I got a notice that my 2 car garage was open.  I went into wink and closed it.  Very simple and easy.  Yes it's not homekit, but it's $99 and it works.

Same story... i.e. no story! Six months since the open letter was posted without anything... And a year or more prior to the open letter of the same. Promised with HomeKit release from Apple: Fail. Promised in 2015: Fail! Promised in 2016, that's 2 months away and Im pretty sure I can go ahead with confidence and mark that: Fail!

I have a shop with 2 overhead doors needing openers. I really want the wall mount but waiting for the home kit compatible version to go with my door locks and lights. I am about to go another route. If Chamberlain won't give any detail as to when, if or how the Chamberlain will work with HomeKit. Maybe we need to start by going another direction with this. Instead of repeatedly asking when, what, where and how maybe we need to just ask and answer this question. Anyone know what other door openers work with home kit?

@Jim, if your going to wait for Chamberlain then I would recommend getting used to and comfortable with manual operation because there's no indication HomeKit support is ever coming to Chamberlain MyQ... Most of us who were early adopters and purchased MyQ on the promise of HomeKit integration upon Apple release have been waiting for nearly two years now!

@Chip, I'm confused as to why you would want your thermostat connected to your garage door opener? That's kind of like saying you connected the turn signal in your car to your rear window defroster isn't it?

Well, I reported them to the BBB. They responded with the same BS, canned response we've all received before, completely ignoring the evidence that they specifically and explicitly stated our existing devices would be firmware upgradeable. This promise was made 18 months ago. The ticket was then closed by the BB as unresolved due to Chamberlain being non-responsive.

I noticed Chamberlain has gone through and scrubbed their Facebook of the promises they made regarding HomeKit being a firmware upgrade for existing customers. Luckily I have screenshots. This is shady and shows a clear intent to cover up.

Disappointed. I don't even care about HomeKit. I use Wink. The whole point of getting this was to CLOSE THE GARAGE on a schedule if left open. It is now a waste of time and money-not returnable as it is over a year old. Will you try to fix the glitch or just abandon your customers?

This is hilarious. If a hardware upgrade is truly needed, that certainly would explain their radio silence here. It would be best to fess up sooner, but maybe they just didn't want to do that until they released the product.

So if I'm reading correctly these links, we are going to be CHARGED $50 to get HomeKit when it was advertised 2 years ago to be an included feature! I haven't seen any posts recently from the Community Manager, can you please respond to these reports and give us any info regarding the status of HomeKit?

As you know, we previously announced our exciting plans for HomeKit integration. Today’s technology space is increasingly complex and constantly changing. As part of our commitment to meeting and exceeding safety and security standards for our products – including, in this case, securing the gateway to your home – we undertook a comprehensive development process for our HomeKit integration. We have priced MyQ HomeBridge accordingly based on the resources required for the integration process as well as the product’s market value. As part of our commitment to doing right by our customers, we will be offering a discounted price for MyQ HomeBridge in April. More information can be found on Chamberlain’s Apple HomeKit page  http://www.chamberlain.com/apple-partnership
