When Google Assistant asks MyQ to close the garage door, MyQ no longer closes the garage door but replies “Garage Door Opener is a virtual garage door opener with a BLE sensor. This type of door may not be closed remotely”.
I can only check garage door status with Google Assistant now. How do I get Google Assistant to close the garage door again?
I don't think Chamberlain would intentionally break Google Home functionality as they advertise Google Assistant integration and closing the garage via voice in a nice advertisement to sell the product:
Kimberly at Chamberlain replied today with the following:
"I apologize that Google Assistant is not allowing you to close the door, however it does appear to be with Google. If the MyQ app is allowing you to close the door but through Google, you can not, it is Google who will need to resolve this. We can not speak to why another app will not allow closing when our app is allowing it. You can try removing and re adding the device, but that is all we would do to verify no issue is with MyQ. The information I have provided should resolve your issue. So at this time, I am going to close the case."
I don't think Chamberlain tech support understands fully the products and services provided by the company. Am I speaking with the right support here (firstname.lastname@example.org?
I've replied with:
"MyQ is not letting me close the garage door. MyQ is giving me the error message "Garage Door Opener is a virtual garage door opener with a BLE sensor. This type of door may not be closed remotely"
It isn't a message from Google Assistant. It is from MyQ.
Chamberlain offers a premium MyQ service as outlined here: http://support.chamberlain.com/articles/How_To/Features-and-Benefits-of-Google-Home/?q=google+home&l=en_US&c=Brand%3AChamberlain&fs=Search&pn=1
That is the plan I currently subscribe to.
3rd party apps cannot control MyQ linked garage doors directly. They must relay commands to the MyQ service who then perform the actions.
This is the point where the MyQ service responds with the error message: "Garage Door Opener is a virtual garage door opener with a BLE sensor. This type of door may not be closed remotely"
Also, I've done as you've suggested and unlinked and relinked MyQ but it didn't fix anything.
Currently I'm paying for your MyQ premium service which only works to inform me if the garage door is open or closed but nothing else. "
I was finally directed to next tier tech support.
They were not interested in troubleshooting the unit much except for a few question about the model I had. The next mail exchange, tech support wants to ship a newer model at no charge.
My hub unit was apparently manufactured in 2014 and there is a newer one that has better integration with Google Home.
I told them that this feature used to work with this exact model. And there are others with the same issue. They didn't seem interested in getting this thing to work again.
I suspect they don't anticipate many people with this issue and overall it will be cheaper to send new units over reverting some code to get this model to work again with Google home.
So I will wait for the new model to come in and then see how that one integrates with the google home.
Here is a pic of my current hub they are replacing for reference in case people are interested:
My advice to others with this issue is to raise a ticket with Chamberlain and have them send you a new unit as well.
I will report back when I get the new unit and whether it works or not as expected with Google Home.
Open MyQ app
Go to Google Assistant
Select "Get App"
Download Google Assistant (I know, I already had it too)
You'll go back to MyQ
Now on the Google Assistant option, you'll see "launch"
Google Assistant will launch
(With garage door open) Tell MyQ to close garage door
MyQ: I'll work on that
Garage Door starts to close
You just have to download Google Assistant through the MyQ app!
