MyQ: Unsafe - garage opens on its own

  • Updated 1 month ago
Purchased this myQ Garage Door opener because of the ability to monitor Open/Close status while using the myQ app. The opener is only a few months old and already on 2 occasions I found the garage door had opened on its own. To make matters worse, I did not get a notification that the garage had opened. If I had at least received a notification then I could have checked the door right away. The door may have been opened all night.  This is unacceptable and defeats the purpose of being able to monitor and control the door remotely. The unintended opening of the garage door leaves the home unsecured.

I use a different app called WINK as a backup.  IF you go that way, use caution as WINK is powerful.

I set WINK to send me a email notice if MyQ Chamberlain garage door is open for four minutes or more.  The four minutes was a value I chose.  I get alarms on my cell phone when ANY email comes in.

===============

Perhaps you may want to set your MyQ settings.  My cell phone requires a PIN code in order to function MyQ, but I had to set that option in the app.  Otherwise, it is a simple login with the possibility of the cell phone keeping the log in saved.  An accidental bump could then open the garage door.  Same for my laptop.

Thanks Jeff. I have set up my notification settings with the myQ app. On the 2 occasions that I found my garage door open, I did not get any notifications. My cell phone also requires a PIN code in order to function myQ. I also put the myQ app in a separate folder so that it doesn't get accidentally bumped or swiped because you're right one touch on the app opens the door. I will check out WINK as you suggested but for now I have disconnected the gateway as I really don't know why the door opens randomly.

I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with the door opening (closing) on its own. The symptom that you have described is called "Phantom Operation". The most common cause is caused by a neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener, which could have happened when you programmed your hub to your opener. What you will need to do is clear the memory of your opener and then reprogram any remotes, keyless entries and MyQ Garage back to the opener. I have included troubleshooting instructions below.

Answer Title: Why does my garage door opener activate on its own?

Thank you for sending the instructions. My concern is that I did not receive any notifications that the garage was opened. Additionally, if my neighbor's remote opened the door then why didn't it also close when the neighbor closed their garage door? The 2 occasions the door was opened it was not fully opened but approximately 80% open the 1st time and 10% open the 2nd time.

I took a screenshot of the myQ status which showed "STOPPED FOR 10 HOURS" and the picture was of the door 50% open (the door was actually about only 10% open). Again I didn't receive a notification but the myQ status was "stopped". See attached picture. So being I took this picture at 8:16 AM and the door was stopped for 10 hours means the garage was open since the night before.

The more I think about your report of a partial open/close reminds me of when I bump my physical hand held remote a couple of times.  When all is working textbook the first click sets things in motion and the second click while still responding to the first click causes the garage door to freeze in the middle of what it was doing.

Typically when I press a third time, it reverses what it was doing.  Where is your physical hand held push button remote?  In a purse that can be bumped around?  In the holder between the seats?  Just a thought based on what has historically happened in our home.

Hi Jeff, I have one hand held remote in a car. The other is in a drawer that rarely gets used. I reposition the remotes to prevent any accidental bumps. Thanks for your insight.

Are you guys still having issues? I just installed my Q and the garage door seems to be opening on its own. It has done it 3 times now. And yes, I do get notification. I'm checking to see if it's the neighbors remotes at the moment.

Erase all remotes from the opener and relearn only the remotes you use.

I installed two openers within a few months of each other, but haven’t hooked anything up to the internet. Last night, both doors opened up all by themselves!

I also started facing this trouble and tried resetting codes as per FAQ and knowledge from forum and website still issue persists. I am using this from last 2.5 years without any problem and from last 1 month I am facing this issue garage door opens randomly but only in daytime strange.
And I do have 24 hrs surveillance camera and do not see any neighborhood activity during that period.
I hope not a security issue or bug at Chamberlain end will try to isolate issue by disconnecting to gateway!

This all below I tried and failed my conclusion is bad reliever logic board how could a board even accepts a signal if it was never paired with anything it is a huge security flaw or issue,

1. Resetting Logic Board 3 times in late night to avoid unwanted paring and paring everything back (Erase all remote controls and key-less entries)
2. Resetting Logic board, 2 car home buttons (Because I am a system analyst and when i discussed with my group of tech guys we concluded that code might be saved in one of car home buttons) and Reset battery of wireless Wall Remote
3. Replacing battery in all remotes
4. Resetting and no pairing at all.

I can never trust a Chamberlain product.
Thanks for wasting so much of my time and leaving my entire family and house vulnerable !!

I am also having this problem.  Last night, my garage door opened and closed 8 times in the space of an hour starting just after midnight.  I've had the MyQ since May of this year.  It was working great until August when we were on vacation.  Our dilegent neighbor noticed the garage door was open and knocked at our door assuming we had come home early.  While he was there, the door mysteriously closed.  He called the sheriff's department who then sent a swat team to investigate.  By the time we received the "garage door open" notification and found out what had transpired, the door had opened and closed 15 times. I immediately contacted Chamberlain.  They walked me through some "fixes" and it worked fine until last night.  Today's call to Chamberlain eventually sent me to Sears garage door department.  Someone is suppose to call back, but, I have my doubts about getting this issue resolved.

Has anyone determined what the base issue is here? I've had my MyQ interface for more than a year. I recently had to reset my router and repair everything to it as it seemed I had more things on my router than I had things. Since re-pairing the opener to the router I have experienced the garage door opening randomly at any time. The other day I woke up to a garage door open, who knows when, Last night it opened by itself at 8:30pm while i was away at a movie. I closed it when I got home and as I was in the alarm system app for my house it opened again by itselt at 12:30am. I refuse to place my wife or our house at risk with a defective device. Help please.

So I have had my MYQ for about 2 weeks now. It seemed to be working fine until yesterday. I changed the password to my network and so i deleted the old setup in MyQ and went through a brand new setup. My garage door has opened randomly twice now, 12hrs apart ( not sure if that’s a coincidence?). I have gotten notifications each time, but here’s the deal. When the door opened 2 hours ago, my wife and I got notified. She closed the door and we again got the notification saying it was closed. But when I went into the app it was showing that door had been closed for 12 hours! Had to ‘close’ the app and then go back for it to be updated!

Denny-  I have been dealing with LM8500 random door opening since April (4 months now). Problem started right after I installed a Chamberlain keypad just before we left the country for 8 days. On our return neighbor said she found door open 3 times and she unplugged it on the third time. Initially I removed the battery from keypad; door still opened on its own. Then I replaced the wall control unit at my expense, not remembering that the unit has 5 yr warranty. No change. Called your service techs- they said bad control board; sent new one, I installed. Seemed to be fixed, initially then a random open/close a week later. Another one today. This is absurd considering LM's previous good credibility. Does my email show on this? If so, I would appreciate a reply ASAP....thanks!

One of my garage doors started randomly opening yesterday as well. It started after I had to unplug the opener to replace the back up battery. I also had the opener “learn” one of our cars at that time as well. I have run the troubleshooting steps and eliminated the stuck remote button or the neighbor as a culprit. I have now disconnected the 828LM gateway to see if that is the source of the phantom openings. I would appreciate someone from support contacting me to help with the troubleshooting process.

Has anyone contacted you? I am thinking of adding the 828lm internet gateway but after reading some of these posts am doing a rethink. Seems the very reason one would want to add the remote away from home option is making things worse.

nobody contacted me but i was able to solve the problem. it was not related to the internet gateway after all. i unplugged the gateway and the door kept opening and closing randomly throughout the day. somehow when i programmed another opener , things got messed up. i had to erase all the openers for that door and reprogram them. took about 10 minutes and everything is fine.

yep that’s a good way to find out of any weird openings or closings. i’m sure it will be fine. mine has worked fine for over a year, so i figured something weird had to have changed for it to start misbehaving....
