MyQ Garage No Longer Closes Garage Door (Opening is OK)

Hello,
My MyQGarage will no longer close the Garage door. This worked fine before, but just noticed today that the Door is not being closed. It works fine when I open it via my Android App and via the MyChamberlain Website.

When I try to close it via the Android App (Same results with the iPhone App and MyChamberlain Site), the unit beeps for several seconds... and the App waits, then I get a 'Garage is not responding. Please try again later.'

So far, I have reset the MyQGarage using the Gear button and deleted it from my Profile. When I went through the process of re-adding it, and setup the Sensor again, it was able to open and close my door without any problems. But once done, it was able to open the door, but still will not close it.

The door closes fine using the regular remote door opener that came with the Garage Door Opener.

How can this be fixed?

Thank you for your help.

Orlando,

I'm sorry to hear you are having a problem with your door closing. In some instances when the hub had been installed too close to the motor unit, interference may occur.
  1. Unplug the hub and move it away at least 2 feet from the motorhead. Test to see if the door will open and close. If this takes care of the issue, the hub will need to be installed further away from the motor unit. If the hub is already 2 feet away try turning it 180 degrees and testing the door from the app.
Note: If the hub has to be installed further away from the opener, it must still be installed inside the garage so that the flashing light is visible to the door.

I realize this is an older thread, but I just installed my unit and I had this problem, which was solved by moving the device further away from the opener device. Mine's a Chamberlain opener as well and when I read this after it wouldn't repeatedly close using the device via the app, I moved it about ten feet away. Works reliably now. Sounds like the device signal is unidirectional vs omnidirectional. That would make sense if it were, since being too close to the "receiver," the transmitter being uni has a much narrower target to hit vs a larger or broader area. The advice of turning the unit 180 degrees strongly suggests a unidirectional component. I wish they had put markings on the transmitter to suggest a direction to mount pointing towards the receiver, but it now works regardless.

Hello,
The Hub is located 26 inches from the motorhead.

I turned the Hub 180 degrees, and still had the same results... OK to Open, but Closing failed.

Thank you.

I would suggest deleting the opener from your MyQ account and readding it. I have included some steps below.

How to delete a device from the MyQ Garage (Wi-Fi Hub) or Internet Gateway

Hello,
That was one of my original troubleshooting steps, and that's what I meant when I mentioned that "I deleted it from my profile" in my original message.

Do you think the unit might have went bad? Would be unfortunate...

Thank you.

Hello,
Yesterday, I went to test this, and tried to open my Garage Door with the App, and the door did not open. After a minute of waiting, I decided to use the Garage Door Opener Remote to open the Door.

Afterwards, I tried using the App to close the door, and the door closed, no problems. Then I opened it with the App, no problems.

I continued testing today, and the door is opening and closing without any problems with the App.

I'm not sure if this should be considered a closed case.. is there anyway to try to determine what might've happened? This was going on for a while, and now it's suddenly working fine again.

While it's working fine now, makes me wonder if something like this may end up happening again in the future.

Thank you.

I'm having the exact same issue as you're reporting.  Worked fine for a month then all of a sudden it won't close the door.  It'll open but when trying to close the hub beeps for several seconds but nothing happens.  I read somewhere that Chamberlain door openers disable the remote close features to keep you from locking yourself out of your house accidentally after a power outage.  To re-enable them, you have to open and close the door once with the remote.  I did use the remote and low and behold, the app seems to be working again.

We'll see :)

Great catch, Joseph! You are absolutely correct. Unattended garage door opener commands are disabled immediately after a MyQ or Wi-Fi garage opener powers up. Thus Timer to Close, Garage Door Monitor and MyQ are disabled until the opener receives a command from a remote, door control or keyless entry to open or close. The opener must perform this one motion to resync its door motion before allowing unattended operation.

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.  If the MyQ loses power, it will be unable to control the door opener until I use a standard remote or the wired button?

I ask because I ran into this same issue and had not suffered a power outage or unplugged the device, so there would be no reason for the MyQ to reboot unless the web service suffered an outage and the unit rebooted during attempts to reconnect.

I think the trick is to first open the door with the App, then try closing it with the App, so that it can re-sync after a power outage.

For me, my door is constantly being opened with the standard remote, and I still had issues. I use the app to basically monitor and close the door, so I rarely use it to open the door.

Very much possible that it could have been an issue with the web service, since it seems to have suddenly started working for me after troubleshooting and starting this thread.

Thanks.

I think we should have the option to disable this feature.  It seems it has gotten into this mode before an no power outage was involved.  I opened my door remotely to test it, but then I was unable to close it remotely so I had to ask someone to physically go to my house to close it for me since I was far away.  If a power outage happened, you'd be unable to close it anyways without power.

Hello

I just Installed MyQ System to open garage door with my android phone. I followed the instructions, created an account, add device and all... It works fine to open the door, but when I try to close the door with my computer or smartphone, it just does not work (light turns on to show something happens but nothing else).

To close the door I must use remote control. Then the software can show status of door closed... It means it is not a communication problem.

Anyone can help me ?

this happens for me as well. Needs to be fixed. How can you offer this to people and not have a go around to close the door if you are out of town. Very frustrating.

I have the MyQ wifi garage door opener and have the same problem..

Here's what i did to resolve this evening.. There may be a more optimal way but at least i found a combination that works; we'll see if it stays....

1. Press and release the program button on my garage door
2. Try opening garage with the phone app
3. On my garage door, i heard a click and the light went off, got an error on my app
4. I press the hard wired garage door opener to open the garage
5. Close garage with app
6. Should work now (tested opening/closing garage 6 times in a row)
(if this didn't work, then try repeating process but on step 5, close door with hard wired garage opener.)

...come to think of it, i wonder if the "pressing the program button" steps are even necessary or if you could just open and close your door with the hard wired garage door opener and it work. If it screws up again i'll test further and update this post.

This problem has also been a continuous problem for me. The App will open the Garage Door every time, and will close the door <50% of the time.  I have resorted to putting the wireless remotes back into the cars because I can not depend on the app to close the door.  It seems like another engineering over design issue.  Closing the garage door and hitting an obstacle has already been  addressed by the laser deteor and door blockage sensor on the opener so I don’t know what the point is to add the extra safety measures.

In my situation, the MyQ is located ~5 feet from the garage door opener, the App will open the door 100% of the time. When closing it, the MyQ will flash the light for ~30 seconds then it quits flashing. The MyQ will continue to beep for ~30 seconds then stop doing anything. At this point, if you try to close it again it will report that the opener is not responding, try again later.

At this point, you can use the wireless remote or the wired button to close the door. I know the MyQ recognizes this because it sends me a notification that the door is closed. Then you can press the open in the App and the door will open followed by a notification that the garage door is open. This confirms that the door sensor is working, it knows when the door is closed or open. At this point if you try and close the door with the app, it is a crap shot if it will actually close it or not. Sometimes (<50% of the time) it will not close and instead will fail and tell you to try later. Then sometimes it will close. So in the end, this is a great device if all you want to do is open your garage door, if you want to close it, you need a remote opener or to use the wired button.

I have read on various web-sites that the problem is that MyQ attempts to add ‘smarts’ to keep the door from closing. It appears these smarts aren’t so smart. I have went to my web-page to see if there was some setup or someway to disable the door-close feature but so far I’ve not been able to. What I get on the web-page is:

Is there someway to disable this debilitating feature?

This is ridiculous. I have completely started over with every recommendation here. I have deleted the account and started over, reinstalled app on 2 different devices, opened and closed with remotes, homelink, control hub on wall, everything. It opens with app about 50% of the time and has actually closed once out of about 25 attempts. I have received every error including hub not online (even though it is because I'm looking at it), timed out error, and no response.
This was such a great device a year and a half ago when i bought it. It worked everytime. I was even able to add it to smart things where it would automatically open and close when I arrived and left. Then the smart things compatibility was taken away, now it doesn't even work as advertised.
I guess it's time to pull it down and look into another more dependable brand.

I have the same issue. Opens the door ok 100% of the time. Never closed the door successfully. It only beeps once and flashes once when I want to close using the app and nothing else happens. After few mins I get the error that garage door not responding.
I removed the device from app and added again. Factory reset the device. Moved it to different locations. None of these helped. Still opens successfully everytime and doesn't close the door any time.

Sure, that would be great. Just FYI these are the steps I have already done :
Removed device from account and added to it back
Factory reset the myQ opener
Moved the opener in different locations in the garage
Removed the light bulbs on the garage opener opener

In general this is not an interference issue since the door opens everytime. It's just the closing that is not happening.

The opener is supposed to beep and flash multiple times when closing the door but I only see 1 beep and flash. So something is wrong with the opener.

I have the same problem.  It opens 100% of the time and never closes with the app.  Instead, when I try to close with the app, it just beeps.  When I close the door with either the remote control or the hardwired controller, it works 100% of the time.  The app even correctly updates to say that the door is now closed.  I've tried all the troubleshooting steps and nothing has helped.  I believe something is wrong with your app.  (I have the iOS version that I downloaded from the app store on 11/1/2017.)

In the meantime, here's one fix that has worked for some people: rotate the hub 180 degrees. This can help the signal get through when the garage door is open. Let me know if this works. Chuck

I am having the same issues with the garage door closing. It will open but will not close. I installed the system two days ago and it worked with out issues for 1 day. The second day it would not work. I removed it from My Q app and reinstalled it. After seeing this post I have moved the location of the unit and it not has worked.  I guess the good news is I can just return it if there isn't a fix in a few days. It sounds like a software issue with MyQ. Any other suggestions not found on this page as I have gone through them all.

hello

I have same problem since beginning.

I think it comes from the fact that engine had been once forcing to much on door not closing (when making bad tests after installation).

it is a kind of security that happen once the engine would have force too much, it will never close anymore with software, but still works with remote control or push button.

I read somewhere there is possibility to make a hard reset of the engine to make him forget he had hard time and restart again in factory mode.

But nobody so far was able to help me to do this engine hard reset...

It does not come from mother board which was changed, it does not come from IR beam which was changed and correctly installed, in perfect line...

It is interesting to read all these report from people, all reporting the same problem that the door opens 100% of the time and fails to close 100% of the time. I have and continue to have the same problem. I received this as a gift and since I installed it it has never worked correctly. It always reports the door open/closed correctly so that is all I use it for and I have to keep my remote opener handy to close it.

Clearly there is a problem with the product. From my research it has to do with a convoluted closing algorithm where the safety checks always fail. The light flashes and beeps like it is supposed to but then it never closes so it is obvious that some safety check in the firmware is failing. What is interesting is that any such check is even necessary given the other safety measures already in place with garage doors (light sensor and back pressure sensor). It would appear that added checks in this unit is just another case of over engineering.

In the end, the unit is good for reporting the door state (open/close) and opening but you always have to close it using the wall button or original remote which kind of defeats its purpose. If I hadn’t received it as a gift I would have returned it months ago.

Is there anyone in here that their problem got resolved? I see many people that the agents were supposed to contact them. They sent me an email and asked me to call them and I'm not usually home at the time they expect me to call, so I cannot test anything that they say.
I already had an email communication with MyQ customer service and performed everything they asked me to do and nothing helped.
I'm wondering if anyone in here has been able to resolve the problem. It clearly shows something is wrong with the device itself and it's not a communication problem since the door opens without a problem every time.
