I've had problems with my MyQ randomly opening my garage door without me knowing about it.

I'm positive this is related to the MyQ system, as I was having this problem on and off for a few weeks.  I disconnected the MyQ gateway for a couple of months and didn't have a single issue. I thought i'd give this system another try, so I changed my home router password, reprogrammed the opener and remotes, changed my Chamberlain account password and opening number, and wouldn't you know it,  after a week,  my garage door opened by itself in the morning, and then again in the evening, and stayed open all night while I was away from home.  My phone dd provide a notification the door was open, but I didn't have it by my bed, and so didn't see the message until the morning.  I am very lucky I live in a low crime neighborhood, so that everything was still in my garage when I returned. How is it possible that this is happening?

What system do you have? A garage door opener with MyQ built in? or the universal kit (MYQ-G0201)?

I have a GDO with MyQ built in, plus the internet gateway added, I haven't had this problem yet,

I do have the universal kit (MYQ-G0201), with a Chamberlain Liftmaster Model 3265 opener.

and you confirmed that the door was open in the morning?

Only reason I ask is because I did read users reporting that the door sensor sometimes gives false readings, where it says the door is open but it's actually closed or wind blew and moved the sensor. I think I also saw some users say it does it more when the batteries are low.

Have you checked to make sure your photo eyes are aligned on each side of your garage door? Sometimes when they aren't it signals that there is under the door causing it to lift automatically as a safety precaution.

Thank you for the comments / questions.  Yes,  I confirmed the door was open; but you are correct,  along with actual openings, I also experienced some false alerts when I first installed the gateway and sensor.

Per the door sensors,  I only have a problem when the MyQ gateway is active. I didn't have any problems before I reconnected the gateway, and no problems since I've unplugged it.

The symptom that you have described is called "Phantom Operation". There are a few things that can cause this type of problem. The most common causes are: possibly caused by a neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener, a stuck button on a remote control, or a shorted wall-mounted door control sending unwanted signals to the garage door opener. I have included troubleshooting instructions below.

Answer Title: Why does my garage door opener activate on its own?

We are also experiencing phantom operation, ours goes absolutely crazy opening/closing multiple times in a row (we're taking like 30 up/down's at once).  I tried clicking on the "answer link" posted above, but the link is not working?

My garage door opened by itself yesterday evening Aug 5th at 5:20 pm ish. I didn't get a notification until the next morning at 7:45 am. What is going on with this thing?

Lets say that it is a neighbors remote, as you are saying. Why aren't the notifications coming until the next day? When I open the door manually without using MyQ, I get a notification. How do you explain that?

In my opinion the notification system is broken.  I only get a notification in about 1 out of 10 times my door opens/closes.

We just started to have this problem yesterday with our GDO. I heard the garage door open this morning around 4:30 am. This thing has been opening all night long. Just read the history on the app and opened and closed around 14 times during the night. No notifications either. We just unplugged the Gateway this morning and this thing has not opened since we did this. Very frustrating.

My door opened 52 times between midnight and 5 AM last night. After waiting for almost an hour on-hold, I spoke with a very nice lady who tells me I need to troubleshoot and service my 18 month old opener.  I still have no clear idea what the problem is, but I have a list of things I need to try over the next few days, while leaving the device unplugged overnight and when I'm not at home.  Very disappointed.

Follow-up:  After researching this issue, long-story short is that I had contacted Chamberlain for a replacement sensor/interior button for the opener.  Since I had done that replacement (a 10 minute repair) 5 months ago, the problem has not resurfaced.

We found out it was the wall controller....just take it off for a few days..we had a garage guy tell us this is a known issue with one of their controllers. it never went up once when we took this off the wall. We replace with a different one and have not had one problem since.

I believe it was replaced with 886LMW. They know this is a issue with one particular wall controller which is the same controller we had on the wall. Mine was going up and down all night long...I could see the history of it on my account. I got angry at Liftmaster and swore I would not recommend them to anybody...they finally agreed to have it replaced for me. We have not had any problems at all. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.  My wall controller is wired directly to the opener motor, not wireless, so I'm having difficulty believing that it is the cause of my problem.  For the past year, I've set MyQ to monitor only, and have not had any phantom opening issues.  Early on, I was still getting the odd false garage door open alert, but that has improved.  I've set my alert for 5 min of opening, and the alerts do come in correctly.

There is a DEFINITE problem here and Chamberlain needs to fix this.  I have had mine for several years now and it just started opening and closing on it's own in the past couple months.  We were on vacation for two weeks and it opened and closed 20 times one time remaining open for 17 hours causing our neighbor to be concerned and called the police.  They searched every room in the house and thankfully no one was there and nothing was stolen...  I have disconnected the gateway and so far no issues although I bought a WiFi GDO for a reason and now I cannot use it.

I too have been experiencing "phantom operation" for many months now.  I have woken up in the morning to hundreds of alerts with my garage door opening and closing over and over throughout the night while my family was asleep.  This is a HUGE SECURITY RISK, and Chamberlain needs to figure out what is causing this issue since it appears to be widespread with MANY PEOPLE affected.  The only solution for me is to ENABLE THE REMOTE LOCK feature on the wall control panel.  This makes it so no remotes are unable to open the garage, but allowing it to still operate.  When enabled, the button on the control panel can still open and close the garage, as well as using the myq app, but it is a pain to have to use these methods instead of being able to click a remote.  This makes me think it is not an issue with the wall control panel, since when the lock is enabled, it will still open the garage.  It also doesn't appear to be an issue with MyQ, since I am still able to open and close the garage with the MyQ app, when lock is enabled.  Again, I don't experience phantom operation anytime lock is enabled.  I didn't pay all that money for a garage door opener, to have to use some ridiculous workaround, to ensure the safety of my family. I WILL NEVER BUY A CHAMBERLAIN/LIFT MASTER product ever again, and will make sure to tell as many friends, family members, coworkers, etc. about the problems with their products and why they shouldn't purchase them either.  Chamberlain/Lift master can't even admit to the issue, let alone resolve this major security threat.  As you can see, many people have already experienced theft and other problems associated with this "Phantom Operation" issue, and it completely defeats the purpose of owning a garage door opener if you are constantly worried that it will open on its own during all times of the day.    For Chamberlain/Liftmaster to try to blame these things on a neighbors remote accidentally being programmed to openers is laughable.  I assure that my neighbors aren't all night pushing their garage remote over and over hundreds and hundreds of times, and I am willing to bet that isn't happening with the thousands of people experiencing this issue.

I've reviewed the listed explanations as to why this could happen. I'll elaborate a little further... When I disconnect the device from my home internet, I do not have the problem. Have you had this issue reported in the past? I do not see this possibility in the explanations you have provided, or how to resolve it.

This is our problem too, as soon as we disconnect the device from our internet, the problem stops.  We've had it disconnected for months, and haven't had one single issue.  Can someone please also contact me to have this resolved?  One of the selling features for us initially was the capability to have control from our phones, however we aren't using this feature due to the ghost issue of it opening randomly on it's own.  Thanks!

Sounds like you need to do some troubleshooting, have you tried anything already suggested above so far? What type of MyQ opener do you have? or do you  have the universal kit? Those then to have more problems, the sensors are also not reliable, have you confirmed the door is actually opening and closing when this happens?

I have had the "phantom" door opening problem the past week after 2 years of not having the problem (2 year old house).  For the past 2 years, my two garage openers (new house) were connected to WIFI and I was able to operate them using the MyIQ app; all was good.

It began after I had to reconfigure WIFI.

It cannot be a neighbors remote because a)the problem only affects one of the two openers, and b)  I drove around today with MY remote in a 1000ft radius clicking away and did not open any of my neighbors garage doors.  All my remotes are known to me and their buttons are NOT depressed.

Recently, because of the Google Home WIFI issue, where home routers were being bombarded with traffic from Home and Chrome devices, nearly all of my connected home devices dropped off the house WIFI (Nests, phones, iPads, chromecasts, and MyIQ devices).  I changed WIFI passwords and had to go around to all WIFI devices and re-configure the WIFI settings.  I was able to do this on nearly all devices without problem.

When re-configuring the WIFI on the MyIQ door openers I was able to do one easily, however, the door that is having the "phantom" issues did not set-up easily.  It took me a couple sessions over the course of 10 days.  During the time the unit was NOT on WIFI it was opening up at least 2-3 times per day (late PM and early AM).  This happened several times over the week.  Scary!

Yesterday, I was finally successful in setting up the "phantom" door with WIFI and now am able to control it with my phone app.

I had hoped all was good, but today , while cleaning the garage, the "phantom" door opened by itself while I was doing a project.

Because of the security risk, my only option is now to unplug the garage door opener which really is terrible.

Chamberlain Support, what say you?

HI Lauren,
I did consult that article.  I do not have the version of wall controller to see number of remotes associated to the opener.  That said, it cannot be another remote because only one of two doors is exhibiting this issue; if a neighbor had same then both doors would open.  Also, I cannot open any of my neighbors with my remotes.

It seems more than coincidental it began to happen when the WIFI was disconnected.  It has happened recently with the WIFI connected. Has Chamberlain explored what happens on intermittent (up/down) WIFI connections?  But again, this is only happening with ONE of the TWO identical openers.

I suppose that leaves me to try to troubleshoot the "shorted wall mount" but again, all was working fine for the 2 years its has been installed until WIFI config was changed.

I would really  like to step thru this with someone from your Technical team.

We just had our garage door open this morning multiple times while we were at work. Separate from the MyQ opener, we also have the iSmartAlarm system in our house and I have a door sensor on the garage door. When the MyQ app notified me that the door had opened, 30 seconds later I got a call from the security system that the door had opened. This was confirmation that the door had definitely physically opened. Knowing this (and that there have been burglaries in the area), I called 911. My wife drove home and met a police man and there was no sign of a break-in and nothing was missing. The motion detector inside the house didn't go off, so I knew no one went inside. It wasn't until later that it dawned on me that it was either the MyQ system opening the door, or someone was driving around the neighborhood randomly trying a remote to see if any doors would open.

Now, this line that it was a "phantom operation" from a neighbor's remote is a bunch of crap. Here's why: If you come home and press the remote and drive your car in the garage, at most you'll press the button twice. Most of the time though you'd press it once, and on your way in the house you'd use the button on the wall. Our garage door opened and closed 4 times in one minute. I don't know what spastic neighbor would be pressing their opener over and over that would also just happen to have the same code as ours. The odds are outside the realm of chance.

Also, I think Chamberlain knows there's a problem and the "phantom operation" line has been fed to all their tech support employees. In the original post in this thread by "MyOpenerGoneCrazy", the guy described how he troubleshoot the issue. He eliminated the MyQ system as a variable by unplugging it. The problem went away. When he plugged it back in the problem came back. So either his neighbor with the same code as his was on vacation at the exact same time his system was unplugged, OR the MyQ system was the cause of the problem. But the reply from tech support completely ignored this and went straight to the "phantom operation" excuse.

There should be logging in the MyQ system somewhere that can tell us if the garage door was opened by MyQ or by an outside force. But when I called tech support to ask all I got was the ridiculous "phantom operation" line. I'm not satisfied. Chamberlain needs to fix this.

Same problem here, phantom operation of one of two openers.  Had to unplug garage door to stop it from going up and down.  Would like a replacement also, appears to be a known problem.
