IFTTT and Echo integration

Please add IFTTT and potentially Echo integration. I would love to have geo-location enabled opening and closing of the garage door! Also it'd be great to ask Alexa to open, close, or check on the garage doors.

Just an FYI, Echo does have access through Wink integration. The Wink hub is $49

I'm having the same problem. It breaks the shortcut in wink via IFTTT if you add any garage door command. Humm

A "Safety feature" Really annoying. Wink needs to fix their shortcuts for Garage doors, or MyQ needs to improve their compatibility, or IFTTT needs to show shortcuts for Garage doors or something. Alexa, Google Assistant isn't needed if we have proper IFTTT support either directly or via Wink.

I don't understand this "safety" feature. When I get close to my house, the lights come on and the door unlock. But the garage door does not open due to "safety"? How unsafe is it to open or close your garage door ? And if you are afraid that someone will say "Alexa , open the garage door " ... that is not safe that is stupid .

How about being able to Close the garage door with a command?  Does that pose a safety risk?  What about being able to ask Alexa if the Garage door is open??
Why can't these things be done?

Hi,

IFTTT aside, if your plan is to just have MyQ integrate with Alexa, here is an alternative approach by following the instruction posted on https://github.com/jbnunn/Alexa-MyQGarage/blob/master/StepByStepInstructions

Please follow the guide carefully if you are having trouble getting this to work as I also posted some tips there.

Also, be sure to download the latest copy of all the necessary files from https://github.com/jbnunn/Alexa-MyQGarage particularly main.py as the original code that was released was missing a colon at the end of line 72 that was causing problems.

Lastly, if you are worried about security, you may opt to comment out lines 204 to 208 from the main.py code by inserting a # symbol at the beginning of the line, so that you can only ask Alexa to close the garage but not to open.

Hope this helps, Good luck!

I am successfully using Echo with IFTTT and Octoblu.  Look at Octoblu.com for a MyQ blueprint I created https://app.octoblu.com/bluprints/cd0c84a5-acda-4312-aa11-4ed617901850/detail.  The IFTTT service uses Echo to post to Octoblu.

I have also used PageNodes.com for voice operations using its voice recognition node but not with Echo.

Thanks for the response David. Sounds a bit complex for the functionality at the moment. I guess this is a fallback if the native tie in doesn't happen in the future.

Hi David,  I got the Octoblu account setup working with MyQ, but I am failing when I try to link the custom skill to Echo.  It keeps saying:

{"code":400,"error":"invalid_request","error_description":"redirect_uri does not match"}

Any idea what I am doing wrong here?

Hi All,

Just an update, I was able to use David's Octoblu Flow, custom alexa skill, and Echo too.  I am embarrassed to say how long it took me as there are some nuances that you have to learn if you haven't ever used Octoblu in conjunction with a custom Alexa skill.

Just to add, what helped me figure it out was unit testing.  I got Octoblu working first, and then I started working on the custom skill.  The hardest part was linking the "Device" to Octoblu account.

In order to make it work I had to make my commands sound like I am a cave man "Alexa, ask garage trigger work" for example.  Stay away from test, open, close, etc.

Good luck and thanks David!

Congrats! Can you post some instructions of what you did to get it working? I actually went a different route. I installed homebridge. There is a homebridge package for chamberlain. Now I can open and close using Siri. Also I see there is a IFTTT extension as well. So theoretically one can do a Echo -> IFTTT -> homebridge -> chamberlain command.

Octoblu? Caveman? How ridiculous to have to jump through all those hoops to make an electronic switch go 'click'.

Let's grasp what this is. At root, we have a door to open/close, and a sensor to tell us which state that door is in. Chamberlain has been"working diligently" for years, and yet has never managed to get a single promised integration working. Works with SmartThings ". Remember that lie? "'HomeKit integration, 2015." Remember that one? In that time, 5000 new skills have been added to Alexa. Dozens of devices dedicated to SmartThings, dozens added to HomeKit.

A handful of amateur coders developed an entire new rules engine for SmartThings in the course of a few months.

Yet Chamberlain keeps making new announcements, and keeps assuring us they are "working diligently".

I actually started using Octoblu before integrating with Alexa, etc. so I could automatically check if our doors were open late and send messages about it. Whatever similar functionality is in the iPhone app never worked for me (haven't checked in many months). Octoblu is very flexible and also has many other features. I wish Chamberlain would get on the ball with their integration too!

Good to know that somethings happening. But sad that there is no mention of Android support and it will take more than 6 months to launch HomeKit support.

safety??? this is full BS...
I was at CES and saw Chamberlain, what they announced is poor!
how about making sure that the garage door is always closed at night, like after 10pm for example...
how about closing the door if it stays open for too long...
Having to buy hubs and // connectors, developping triggers and by-passes is not the solution... This kind of feature should be out of the box.
The MyQ app is also very poor, offering guest access and family members should be there.
I returned MyQ and switched to Gogogate... best decision ever

This is just RIDICULOUS. There is NO REASON not to have, at the very least, IFTTT integration to:

a) IFTTT query the open/closed state of a garage door AND
b) IFTTT alert on open/closed state change.

Those features alone will cover the requirements of many users.

We are constantly working with other tech leaders to improve the MyQ experience, and today we’ve integrated with two new partners.

We’d encourage you to update your app today and go to the account linking section to see the latest results of these efforts.

You need to explain to management that nobody is charging customers for integration these days. This isn't 1995. Integration is a REQUIREMENT, not a nice to have optional add-on. You can either fix it now or the market will force you to.

But you have to pay for this. Completely unacceptable, not a single other home automation product I own requires a "subscription". Cameras, IFTT, Alarm system, switches, even my electric meter is connected for free.

As the OP, I am thoroughly disappointed that you're taking this route. What your management failed to realize is that IFTTT integration is not considered a premium service to the consumer. I am considering replacing with RYOBI system because they support their customers and I'm tired of this monopolistic attitude that you have towards your customers.

Lauren, I understand you are a bridge between customers and the high ups who are making these decisions. But all you are doing is trying to calm an angry bunch who aren't happy about this whole shenanigans. You'll need to reach out to your superiors and really let them know how we are feeling! After waiting for so long and checking weekly to see if integration is finally available. Now that it is, we will have to wait for another year until the (I'll keep this thought to myself) realize that it was a stupid move and should be taken off. Let them see it now instead, so we can all be happy. No one is waiting to see if there'll be a change of heart. I'm moving on with other options. You're CEO can dream about seeing my monthly payments coming through!!!!

Robert, I hope you will believe that we sincerely value the feedback of MyQ Community members. All of these comments, good and bad, are being relayed to the executive team. At the moment, I don't know what the impact will be, but your comments, suggestions and frustrations are being seen by decision makers. Lauren

Thanks for replying back! In this case, I just want to point one thing out to the executive team. I don't see any good comment has come of this. That leaves the bad comments and frustrations of customers! so decision makers, make some good decision for your customers and not just your wallets! Thanks again Lauren!

Every other competitor will quickly have this integration for free soon.

I suspect Chamberlain is going to lose their current advantage in the 'smart garage door opener' market through their own greedy policies.

This feedback either comes as a surprise to them (in which case they're totally out of touch with integration) or they don't care there's push-back because they expect more profits - either way it's pretty disappointing.

My efforts to use Chamberlain to automate anything have been on hold since they pulled the plug on their API.  Now my home is LESS SAFE because a door can be left open (and sometimes is) and I CAN'T GET MESSAGES ABOUT IT!!  REALLY NOT HELPFUL and apparently Chamberlain's definition of security is different than mine.

I HAD an entire system setup to operate my two garage doors via Alexa and I HAD my doors checked automatically to make sure they weren't left open late, which seems to be a BIG request by many users, and if something is left open, I get a text and email.  I could ask Alexa for the status of my doors, and open either or both, etc.  NONE of this works now and hasn't since the API access was shut off!  Yes, I get notifications on my phone from the Chamberlain app when doors open & shut but that is NOT enough.  My house is LESS SECURE now because kids can leave doors open all night and no system alerts me!  I spent hours setting this all up and POOF, NOTHING!  I used Octoblu, IFTTT, Alexa, and the Chamberlain API, INCLUDING passwords.  I even got the guy that started Octoblu, and now works for Citrix, to buy one of these door openers but now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Really, Chamberlain? Your customers have been asking for years for IFTTT integration for the MyQ service, and after years of requesting, badgering and begging, you FINALLY set it up - but for a fee? What an absolutely astonishing and disgusting money grab. I don't have to pay a fee for any of my numerous other smart home automation links with IFTTT or other services - Why would I pay for yours? You won't even let me open my own garage door with your service!!!

There are other options. They may even cost more - but I refuse to pay a subscription to use my own garage door. Your management has clearly gone insane.

I will not spend another cent for one of your products from any of your companies as a result. I'll also be sharing my sentiments with everyone I know. Chamberlain, as a company, is slow to meet current technology, tone-deaf to customer requests, and greedy besides. Is that worth the $1/month you wanted?

I am in agreement with Mr Dan Baumann Jr I will not be purchasing any more Chamberlain products.  Furthermore I will recommend to my friends when asked to purchase some of the other Ifttt compatible products.  It is a shame that Chamberlain chooses to charge for this service.  Chamberlain folks have a lot to learn about customer service.  Shameful!
