How does MyQ work?

I've read (here and on YouTube) how to use a GIGBU (Gateway) to enable my iPhone to remotely control my Chamberlain (MyQ enabled) garage door opener. Some of these note bluetooth setups, wifi extenders while others the need for additional sensors, I'm confused??? Is there any source that explains MyQ technology?

I do not know exactly. It seems that the MyQ hub is supposed to connect with my router, I see that Bluetooth connection on my cell phone. But the car remotes do not appear as live signals on the cell phone, but as they only operate when the buttons are pushed, they don't seem to be Bluetooth as it is supposed to connect and synchronize first and then be in constant contact with the other Bluetooth device. It is undoubtedly a radio signal, but I don't know whether it is on the Bluetooth frequencies or WIFI.

Hi nrr,

Chamberlain and LiftMaster's MyQ technology enables a two-way connection to the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection using a home router, or a wired Internet gateway, delivering remote control and monitoring of MyQ-enabled devices. MyQ technology is integrated into many Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door openers and works with most garage door openers built after 1993.

If you're looking to connect your garage door to your smartphone, there are three ways to do so:

1.     MyQ Garage retrodevice. This device works universally with most major brands of garage door openers built after 1993.  It installs in minutes without any wiring with just a stepladder and screwdriver.

2.     Chamberlain Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener with MyQ Smartphone Control. It requires no additional hardware to connect to a smartphone, and will work out of the box with all of our connected home partner products.

3.     MyQ Internet Gateway and MyQ Internet Connectivity Kit also allows you to connect your  current garage door openers to your home Wi-Fi router and the mobile app.

In another thread I noted that I was able to attach the Gateway GIGBU to my router. But my garage with my Chamberlain door opener (it is MyQ enabled) is over 100 feet from my router. In that thread it was suggested that I get a WIFI "extender".

If I did get a WIFI signal in my garage and got the DOOR OPENER APP (on my iPhone) to be recognized, what is the path from the APP on my iPhone? Since the APP is supposed to control my garage from anywhere how does the signal get to my garage?

Hi nrr,

To answer your first question, I'm sending more information and details re: how to set up your MyQ app on your iPhone.  Link to article here: http://support.chamberlain.com/articles/How_To/Step-by-step-MyQ-setup-using-the-MyQ-Home-Control-app...

Regarding your second question, MyQ technology uses both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to allow users to control their garage door opener from anywhere.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,
Chuck

I just got a new Chamberlain WiFi enabled garage door opener, but my garage is not attached to my condo and is not close enough for a WiFi extender. Is there an alternative way to use the app and my iPhone without a WiFi network available? thanks!
