Google Home Phrases that MyQ will understand

It would be nice to have a list of Phrases that MyQ will understand through Google Assistant.  I can't seem to find a single phrase that will allow me to close both garage doors or check the status of both doors.  I want to be able to say "OK Google, are the garage doors closed?" and have it tell me if they are BOTH closed.

Honestly, I don’t this this is a Chamberlain specific issue, but more of a “scene” or “group” issue possibly. Even with HomeKit or Non-assistant home devices from Phillips or Lutron, etc. to control more than one device at a time you need to create a “group” of the multiple devices. Then put the request to the group opposed to the individual devices.

As an example, I have about 8 individual lighting devices in my basement. When I make the request to turn on/off screen, that single fixture responds. If I want to turn all of them on/off, I need to issue the command to the group “basement” I.e. “Hey Siri turn off the basement.” Then every device in that group reacts.

I only have one garage door so I cannot test this, but I would suggest putting both doors in a group with a specific, but different name than one of the individual doors. You may need to change the door names to accomplish this. Call them like “main and side” individually then name the group “garage door”. Then open / close / status of Main or side will response individually and open /close / status of garage door will potentially trigger a reaction in both. That said, status may respond with “garage door is open “ when only one of them is open and you need to then make further inquiries to see which one actually is still open.

You may already have done this too... Help this helps.

Kevin, start by giving both garage door openers different names within the Apple Home app. Then you can activate each door separately by saying each door’s name. If you say, “Siri, close my garage door.”, all the garage doors will close. If you say, “Siri, close my left door.” it will close just the left door. Does that help? Lauren

Scott, you are absolutely right. I have to confirm that this process works for Google Home as well. Doing that now and very sorry for any confusion. Lauren

Kevin, these are the current Siri skills:

-- “Ok Google, ask MyQ if my garage door is open.”
-- “Ok Google, ask MyQ if my garage door is closed”
-- “Ok Google, tell MyQ to close my garage door”

You'll find a review of Google Home features here: http://bit.ly/2xrrqrr. Lauren

Ok, but to be useful, it has to go UP too!   Please tell me you're going to fix this in a software update or something.  It's not very useful if I cant make it go up too.

Hi Aidan,

Users' safety and security is our top priority. At this time, due to the device being a shared home device (a smart speaker) versus a personal one (a cell phone), we’ve decided against including this functionality.

If you want to be able to open the garage door, you can do so via Siri voice control; your garage will open after you provide your passcode, which adds an extra layer of security. If you're interested, here's more info about Chamberlain's partnership with Apple and how to control your garage door opener with Siri:  https://www.chamberlain.com/apple-partnership

Best,
Lauren

You can force the door to use voice recognition so that visitors to a customers house can't open the door. I don't understand why this is difficult.

That article http://support.chamberlain.com/articles/How_To/Features-and-Benefits-of-Google-Home is incorrect as it states you use the google home app to link myq and google home - you need to use the google assistant app to link the two.

it's also incorrect as it states that you can "enable convenient hands-free management of your MyQ-enabled garage door opener with just your voice."  Really all you can do is CLOSE your garage door.

It should say you can enable "convenient hands-free CLOSING of your door.  To OPEN it, you have to hunt around for the clicker or go out and push the button just like you always did."

Aidan,

If you're an Apple user and want a solution for opening your garage, you can use Siri voice control.

Wait, so I can OPEN the door with Apple HomeKit but only CLOSE the door with Google Assistant?    Can I also CLOSE the door with Apple HomeKit?

If so, why cant I also open the door with Google Assistant?

Because homekit forces an additional security measure by requiring passcode or fingerprint to unlock your phone. Same with door locks. Google home would allow just a voice command to expose your house. Seems like Chamberlain has decided they don’t want to be liable for that.

Aidan, you can both open and close your garage door with HomeKit. Because we can't confirm credentials within MyQ in other third-party integrations, we don't enable the open function for security reasons. Lauren

Google API terms and conditions specifically disallow opening of doors:

"Actions must not enable the unlocking or opening of doors, disabling of physical security mechanisms, or disarming of the security systems via the conversational interface."

Interesting.

Ok next question --- MyQ works fine on my phone, but when I try to use it through Google Home it says "not available in this region."  What's that all about?

Hi Aidan, thank you for your patience.  I've looked into this, and learned that Google Home is not compatible with commercial doors. Google won't work for your setup because it's not compatible with commercial doors. Let me know if you have any other questions.   Chuck

Aidan, I enlisted the help of our tech team to look into your concern, and they reported back the issue was with using a commercial opener. Chuck

Chuck,
It does work with commercial openers, because I've seen it work with my own eyes.  However, currently it does NOT work.  The MyQ app talks to my door fine.  Google Assistant is linked to my MyQ but Google Assistant says there are no doors in my MyQ account and that I should add doors in the MyQ app.  But they're already in the app!

Here are some pictures that might help

Sounds like everyone is upset like me! So I did something about it!

Watch the below - hope this helps! I never use the MyQ app anymore :) Please vote on the video so I know if it helps you all! Best of all my integration is simple, quick, extremely inexpensive and best of all directly integrated with Google Assistant / Alexa without the use of IFTTT! No latency!

Good stuff Kesh! But before I attempt something like that, I would need step by step instructions - splicing into wires is not something I do everyday:-)...Also I don't have a separate MyQ unit on the wall like you - Myq is built-in in my Chamberlain HD750WFC garage opener. I just have a typical open/close wall control unit.

The beauty is you don't need a MyQ remote or Chamberlin brand - this can be on ANY garage door. You are literally just taking the two wires from the wifi switch (output) and connecting them to the same input your garage door button on the wall goes too. Basically the two wires that go from the button on your wall to the main garage opener unit, simply run the two wires from the wifi switch I point out in the video to same spot. So you would have two wires in one input pin, and two wires in the other input pin. I did say slicing in the video, no splicing, I ended up just connecting directly as explain above.

Additionally, you will just buy this unit: https://www.itead.cc/smart-home/inching-self-locking-wifi-wireless-switch.html

Follow the setup for Inching Mode 1. Then here are the instructions to connect the wifi https://www.itead.cc/smart-home/inching-self-locking-wifi-wireless-switch.html

Once this is all set up just follow the Google Home app to connect the device.

Thanks - that was my next question after looking at the product - which mode do you use...so it's inching mode 1. Your second link, for wifi connection instructions, is the same link for the product? I don't see any wifi setup instructions...

I did find this page about how to set up the device to work with Google Home - https://www.itead.cc/blog/sonoff-work-with-google-home

Genius, and simple.  I'm going to try it.  Thanks Kesh.  Did you use the 5V version or the 5V/12V version of the switch?

Funny you ask. These switches were so cheap I bought one of each. If you saw my other video (tankless water heater) I used the 5/12v and it works well. This is low voltage trigger so I don't think it will matter.

ok; I have a commercial LiftMaster lift, so I guess I'll figure out the voltage using my trusty multimeter.   Thank you!  Now to find a free weekend to fiddle with it all.

Great info Kesh. I'm finding out that, like everyone else it seems, MyQ's implementation of this doesn't work very well at all. It doesn't recognize simple phrases that it should and it can't open doors. Plus the fact that they want to charge for it. I suspect they will give up on trying to charge for it eventually like they did when trying to charge for using the app in the beginning. For now I will look into your solution. It seems I may find a few great uses for it.

Charles, our garage doors are not permitted to open via Google Home or IFTTT for security reasons. Options that are available with these integrations include: closing the garage door when leaving home and programming the garage door to close automatically when a specific condition is met, such as exiting a geofenced area around the home. If there are updates to this, we will announce them to the MyQ Community. Thanks, Chuck

LOL Same old BS response. Not permitted by who exactly? Either give people what they want in a service or don't bother. My house came with these Liftmaster door openers, but I'll be looking at other brands if I ever need a replacement. Ryobi has a really nice looking one that is packed with features and available add ons.

"ask MyQ to close the garage" use to work now 8t doesn't. I had MyQ in many Google assistant routines bit none work anymore.
