Garage Door Opening by Itself...

I have had the MyQ Garage installed for less than 6 hours now. I was super exited to get this product added to my smart home setup. Now, I find myself on a ladder at 1:00am uninstalling it because my garage door won't stop opening by itself.

My bedroom sits directly above my garage; so, with a chain driven LiftMaster opener, I know every time the garage door is opened because my bedroom floor shakes.

I was awakened 2 times tonight by the sound of my garage door opening. In 10 years, I've never had a problem with the opener until the night I installed this product.

Here's the weird part. After opening itself the 2nd time tonight, I unplugged it from the power outlet. A few minutes later, the door opened again! I then got the ladder back out and took it and the door sensor down and deleted the device from the app. Knock on wood...it hasn't happened again since.

Anyone else have similar issues? Why would it open again even after cutting the power to the device? This happened late at night, when none of my neighbors would have been using their openers, so I doubt it's any interference from them.

Sigh.  I don't have time to figure out why our garage door just started opening and closing randomly.  The worst part is when I went in the garage first thing in the morning, the garage door was wide opened!!!!  My two units were just installed in December!!!!  There needs to be better solutions than loose wires and a bad circuit board!!  If something is stolen or God forbid, our house broken into via the garage door, you bet I will be suing Chamberlain for their faulty system.  I spent top dollar for these units and this shouldn't be happening.  We had generic builders units before this that were probably half the cost without any of these issues happening.  Very disappointing and I wouldn't recommend these to anyone.

Same here, garage started opening and closing on its own...........woke up 2 days in a row to an open garage door with valuable equipment exposed.  Thought I was going crazy, being so careless to leave my garage door open 2 days in a row until I was in my kitchen the next day and I saw it open on its own.  Called the contractor who installed it to fix it and then contacted Chamberlain about being reimbursed for the parts since I was still well within warranty and they refused to honor their warranty because I didn't contact them before the repair was done!  What a joke.  I'm spreading the word with all of my family, friends and co-workers about Chamberlain products--when I talked to them they came up with this cute term "phantom operation" which is just another way of saying their products fail and fail big time and do not keep their customers and property safe.  There has to be some mechanism in place so if the unit fails the door stays closed and locked.  The next time this thing fails, I will be replacing it with a Genie, simple as that.  Chamberlain can't or won't acknowledge this issue and they do not deserve anyone's business......

I installed the 888LM wall controller with MyQ around 2013-2014. It was an excellent controller and added remote opening and monitoring with my Liftmaster garage door opener. However, the whole system started acting strange last month. The phone app started losing connection to the controller, then it just stopped. Then, the controller won't even open the garage door with the manual opening switch. The last straw was our garage started randomly opening the last few days while we were at work, and I had to come home early. Took out the 888LM and I noticed that when I tried to wire it back, it will open the garage then do nothing. The board is definitely fried. This thing should NOT open your garage when it is in failed state.

I installed a MyQ retrofit package nearly two years ago, and it worked perfectly until yesterday. The app started showing one of our two doors "Offline", and of course, did not explain further. The associated wall control had two flashing lights, then later, with no intervention from us, a single flashing light.

Later that day, one of the garage doors opened on its own, closed, and opened again.

We hadn't lost power, we didn't have anyone doing work on the garage doors or anything electrical, we weren't doing a seance, and the moon was not full. Are there any lame excuses that I failed to address?

None of the excuses matter anyway. I told my wife that there's no coming back from this. I don't care what went wrong to make this happen; it is absolutely unacceptable and I'll never use it again. I have no idea how anyone could ever trust these products after such an event. I'm not troubleshooting; I'm not contacting support, I'm not replacing anything. (Though I have reinstalled the old school wall controls.)

I mean, think about it: Without our intervention, two years after installation, a garage door opened unexpectedly, closed (and could have hurt someone or something), then opened again.

You can bet the farm my next openers won't be Chamberlain.

Same problem here. Garage full of valuables and the 888LM module is the problem. Randomly opens at night exposing everything I have and easy access to my house. No guarantees that door will stay closed. I already asked. Just hope no one gets hurt by someone entering a persons house at night with free access when these things open on their own . I had problem over 2 years now and can’t trust these openers as there is too much at stake.

I had a 8500W and 8550 installed 3 days ago. The 8500W has opened on its own 4 times! I checked what transmitters are connected through the Service menu. MyQ Device, keyless entry and 2 remotes are hooked up. This matches what I have, so no additional remotes were inadvertently programmed. Thoroughly disappointed to come online and read this is a common unfixed issue.

They can’t fix or guarantee the door from opening on its own never mind losses but I think a relatively large court proceeding will occur when unforced house entry occurs ; and someone gets hurt by having free access through these insecure garage door openers . my insurance is informed about issue , all the best.

So these posts go back years and they still haven't done anything to fix this problem? I have 3 from the 8500 series, I am appalled at the amount of headaches these units have been giving me. One needs to have the up and down limits and force limits reprogrammed a few times a year. 2 of them decide to periodically open all by themselves for no reason. Sometimes it will start to go down and then go back up so you can't pull away from the house anymore until you see it closed. So far I have changed all 3 remotes, a wall switch and a circuit board. I have spent countless hours on the phone with their inept service staff to the point of losing my cool. To wake up in the morning and realize you went to sleep with your garage door open all night is a serious issue, as is coming home and finding your garage door is open.If any lawyers are on this board or anyone wants to start a class action lawsuit, I would like to be first on the list. This company needs to fix this VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE immediately, start offering REAL fixes or refunds. If I am not contacted by a company rep, my next step will be to contact every consumer advocacy group, news media and consumer protection agencies I can find and make sure they don't get away with this. They are STILL selling the same defective units, knowing full well the problems they have, this must be escalated......

Too funny - Mine just started doing it today. Had to race home from work and got there to find the garage open about 5' with all my stuff ready to be stolen. As I walked into the garage it closed a few feet, then opened again.  Like it had a mind of its own. Scary that there is no fix yet.

I have been on the phone enough times with their support staff, at least a dozen, enough to know that they have no clue what they are doing. I think Chamberlain's policy must be to go through certain procedures to make it appears that they are trying to help, when in fact they know they have a defective electronic system and for whatever reason aren't implementing it, probably due to costs, figuring all of us here are just written off as lost customers anyway. Puzzling how the feedback for their products are still positive, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am leaving negative feedback anywhere and everywhere I possibly can. I suggest leaving links here so others can do the same.

To all consumers with phantom opening problems with their liftmaster garage door openers. I personally own 3 from the 8500 series and have been dealing with this phantom opening problem for years. Phantom opening is when your garage door opens and closes all by itself. Like many of you, I have come home and or woken up in the morning to find out that my garage door opened all by itself, VERY scary and unsafe for many obvious reasons. I have spent many HOURS of grief on the phone with their technical people and have tried many different attempts at fixing this including but not limited to changing remotes, rewiring, reprogramming, changing circuit boards etc. This morning, I was able to ‘catch’ the door going up and down dozens of times by itself which I captured on video.

The myQ wall control is the culprit people. I am an electronic technician by trade and decided to do a little troubleshooting myself. The copy and paste solutions the company keeps posting is a joke and they obviously have no respect for people’s time and safety. Call them and have them send you a new myQ programmable wall switch. I disconnected mine and the door stopped going up and down by itself. After dis-assembling I quickly noticed that capacitor C1 and C18 are leaking causing a short in the circuitry which is making the door go up and down. This is a common problem on electronic circuit boards nowadays and is most likely due to the cheap inferior capacitors being used. I would like to admonish the company for not figuring this out on their own and caring so little about the safety of their customers.

Thanks Ron for pointing this out. I disconnected my 888 wall unit and phantom opening problem solved. The only thing is I can’t open the garage door through myq app; went to amazon and ordered a new one for about $39.
Installed the new one, added it to my devices in www.myliftmaster.com followed instructions.
Now it works again!!!
As Rob mentioned, the wall unit is the problem

Thanks Ron - that's exactly what I see as well on my controller. When I called Chamberlain, I was told that they controller only has a 1 year warranty on it and that I'm on my own to replace it, and to cover the items stolen from my garage while it was phantom opened during the day.
They won't accept any liability, not even a replacement for the controller. Pathetic service.

They said that they new controller has the issue corrected and that it shouldn't fail in the open position. Considering the simplicity of controller, I am finding it hard to believe if they are using shoddy capacitors that it wouldn't short in the open position again.
Can anyone confirm the new controllers don't have the same issue?

Ron, excellent work in finding the leaking capacitors!  I encountered a ton of similar issues with other electronics manufactured in the 2000-2008 timeframe.  Supposedly the bulk of "capacitor plague" has been resolved, but many companies (Chamberlain likely included) are still using up old stock in making new products.

That being said, my phantom opening issue is not caused by a wall-mounted control (because I don't have one hooked up to the device in question).  I have a slide gate opener that is controlled only by two wireless remotes, and a MyQ internet gateway.  Our problems with the gate opening by itself started shortly after I connected the internet gateway.  It's even more frustrating because everything seems to work fine for months on end, and then with no warning the gate will start off on a series of random open/close cycles (many times being interrupted with the gate only making it halfway open or closed during the phantom cycles).

I believe there may be multiple issues here.  There are obviously defects with the construction and integrity of wall-mounted controls, as you've highlighted.  There also appears to be defects with the embedded control boards within the openers themselves, or a messaging issue related to the back-end infrastructure that runs the internet-connected portion of the MyQ system (Chamberlain's servers and related software).

I have submitted a complaint to the Consumer Product Safety Commission on this, but have not received any follow-up.  This is disappointing to say the least, as it appears that we now have a company that doesn't care about this issue, and a regulatory agency presented with clear evidence of a safety issue that is apparently doing nothing.  It's bad enough thinking of people's property that's being put at risk because of this, but even worse that a child may end up getting severely injured or killed as a result.  I would encourage everyone to contact any regulatory agencies they can think of and continue to provide reports.  Also, it's probably a good idea to start maintaining a backup copy of the complete text of this thread.  This is still a site controlled by Chamberlain, and it would be all too convenient for all of these reports to go "poof" if litigation ramps up.

We have a brand new Chamberlain Smart Garage Opener, B970, installed one month ago. We have woken up twice to the garage door wide open and come home to find it wide open. We just moved in, so our garage is full of our stuff we have not yet unpacked. This is beyond belief that it will just randomly open on its own and that it is possible for a neighbor to be opening it -- what kind of outdated technology are they using?!?! We have not even hooked up the wi-fi on it yet. The problem seems to occur whether you have an old unit or a brand new one . . .

First let me say MyQ was very helpful in my situation with no questions asked really.
Same deal just happened to me last night.  I have 4 openers.  I checked my app this AM and noticed one of my doors had been open for 12 hours.  I checked my cameras and confirmed I did close it.  What I find odd in my case is that it shows the door opened by itself but did not auto close as it always does.   It should close on it's own after 15 minutes as that is how i have it configured.  The next log shows it being closed at 8:58 which is when I manually closed it w/ the app.  So not only did mine open on it's own an hour after I left the property, it appears it also did not auto close as it should after 15 minutes.  I don't know if it's the GDO or the door opener button panel causing this.  I set my app up to alert me via push message when it opens just so I can monitor it for now, god only knows how many other times this has occurred.

I contacted MyQ and they are sending me 4 new 888LMs to replace mine in the hopes it fixes it. I'm going to check for leaky caps in door2.

Do you guys have yours set to auto close as well?  If so, did it auto close or just close on it's own at some random interval?

Play nice people.  I just spoke to a local Genie service center and believe it or not they install some of these Chamberlain jackshaft openers as well!  I asked him if it were his home if he would rip out the Chamberlain and replace it with a Genie and he said no and in fact some of the Genie employees have Chamberlain openers on their garages.  He said that any of the brands could potentially have this issue but it is rare and his reassurance at least gave me some hope that my repair will hold.  If this happens again, I may just give up on garage door openers all together and go back to the caveman days of opening and closing the door by hand.......

Wow this thread is extremely disconcerting.  My current garage door opener (Ryobi - junk!) is in need of replacement and I have been eyeing these jackshaft units for a while due to their compact size and extra (alleged) security.  Very disappointed to read about all these "phantom opening" problems.  Has Chamberlain owned up to the issue?  Can another control pad be used in place of the 888LM?

I got my opener in December 2016 and never had this issue. Two weeks ago I switched from Verizon to Spectrum and that's when the problem started.  I didn't have alerts set up so when I came home I assumed dummy me had left it up but the other night I knew I had closed it and went to throw something in the recycling bin and it was open.  That's when I set up the alerts.  Yesterday I was at work and it opened once on its own and I closed it and then at lunch it opened and before I could wash my hands to touch the app it closed.

I emailed Chamberlain the other day and got the usual response on what to do to have it relearn etc..  I did that yesterday and it seemed good but just now it did the open and close on its own again.

As a female living alone I find this scary.  Luckily I'm in a relatively quiet neighborhood.  But I'm not tech savvy enough to take anything apart other than the remotes.  It's too cold in the garage right now to mess with the relearning task again.

Is there any way to just take it offline and use the remotes only without the wifi and be sure that it won't open and close on its own again?  I'm fine with that.  Lived that way for 40 years lol.

Nope--I had the same issue and don't use any of the wifi features............the only "fancy" thing I did was program a homelink button on my car........their openers still fail and fail big time.  I live alone too and can't afford to replace the whole unit but the next time this happens no matter what I'm having the damn thing ripped out and replaced with a Genie................best of luck to you and let all of your friends, family and co-workers know about your experience.  I'm hoping at some point this company will suffer the consequences of selling faulty products or at least get motivated to find a solution.............

I have chamberlain 1/2 Hp garage door opener installed with myQ a couple of years, recently we found out that the door opens itself automatically without any reason. At the beginning I thought  that mightbe the nebiourhood uses the same keycodes. the code is reprogramed, but not working. So I turn on the lock on wall controller to disable remote key access. But it won't work. If it is not remote key, What is it? I am frustrated. My another door opener is lift master (old model) has no issue. I doubt that it is related to the issue of the this model system board design and software. It is a defected product.

Same issue has been going on for months. Originally thought family forgot to close door or neighbors remotes were opening it. 1 month ago realized not the case & replaced the wall switch. Over the course of past month door's been found open 2-3 times. Again, blamed, family's absent mindendness. Past 3 days I've been watching TV in bedroom over garage & actually hear garage door opening on its own during the day & between 11pm and 2am when no neighbors are on the block. Remotes have been replaced. I have Liftmaster 8550W installed but it's not connected to wifi and I do not use the app. Desperate for help.

This just started last week with one of ours. 2-4am as well; woke up and unplugged it.  tried it again in the morning and 30 minutes later it started randomly opening. Been unplugged for a week now, going to call chamberlain and find out whats going on. Clearly i'm the only one here.

Good luck with that.  Chamberlain customer service is rude and disrespectful..........I think you meant "clearly I'm NOT the only one here" since there are a multitude of reports here about Chamberlain product failure.  That's how I found this forum--I was dumbfounded when they told me that the door opening on its own is "normal" and that because I had a contractor in my area fix it they would not honor their warranty.  What kind of company doesn't honor a warranty when they clearly have an upset consumer with a valid issue with their product?  I'm warning everyone I know about their products--family, friends, co-workers, etc.  Perhaps if enough word gets out and they realize they are losing many many customers it will motivate them to correct the defect that leads to homeowners finding out the hard way that their garage doors are opening on their own.  I recommend others do the same--let everyone you know about the product fail and ensure they are fully informed when they make a decision about a garage door opener.  At the very least we can prevent this heartache for some other homeowners.

I've lived in houses with 20 year old Sears openers and another 15+ years in one with a Genie............I have never, ever seen this with another brand and everyone I talk to is shocked when I tell them about my experience with the Chamberlain issue and subsequent lack of customer support after their product failed big time.  If I were rich I would rip the damn thing out now and replace it with a Genie but unfortunately am not in a financial position to do so right now.  However, no matter what if this happens again with the replacement Chamberlain I had installed by the contractor that's it.........I'm having it ripped out and replaced with a Genie............it's crazy that it's 2019 and with all the advances we've made with technology that I lose sleep at night worrying that I will wake up to property loss or personal harm if someone breaks in my house because my damn garage door is opening on its own!

Weeks, months, even years on this & no apparent fix? Sure wish I would have read these comments before buying this B970, apparently the 5000 reviews I read before purchase were those fake "paid" reviews! Gone through all the troubleshooting 3 times....reprogram remotes, locked, even removed batteries, tried an old wall unit that worked fine 8 years, doorbell wall button, disconnected wall unit altogether, disconnected wifi.It still opens random 8-12 times during the day while im at work. This is very scary...the valuables in my detached garage are 10X what is in my house. Guess I just take the $300 + install to the gut & find another brand?

My sympathies Mike.  This company is a joke.  Customer service is non-existent, warranties are not honored and their products fail and fail big time.  I feel like an innocent victim since I had a perfectly good Genie before and when one of the springs broke on my garage door the contractor recommended replacing my existing unit with one of these jackshaft openers since my Genie was about 15 years old. He offered to come out and install the unit at a good price since I had already given him some business with the spring replacement.  I realize now I made a huge mistake and I think the contractor was just trying to make a buck.  Had I kept the Genie, I'm sure it would still be going strong and I would get better sleep at night.  If this unit fails even one more time I'm doing as you say--disconnecting the power, cutting bait, taking the loss and going directly to my neighborhood Genie company and having them rip the thing out and replace it with a new Genie.  Please tell all your family, friends, co-workers, etc. about your issues with this brand--this failure is potentially dangerous and risk of property loss is real--I figure if enough word gets out this company will either do what is necessary to produce a reliable product or at least lose a lot of business due to their increasingly poor reputation among consumers.

Looks like it's my turn.  I have an 8500W.  Opened by itself tonight at 8:55pm, really disturbing.  Fortunately, I was awake....or the door could have been open all night.  It is unplugged now(including the battery)...or I'll never be able to sleep :(   If I read correctly, it appears the wall control is the culprit?

Yep, you can replace it but no telling when it will (and it will) fail again.  I can't wait until I can afford a Genie so I can sleep better at night.  My advice would be replace it if you can afford it as this company is making no effort to solve this serious problem.

I replaced mine with both a the wireless wall control first and then a new wired wall controller. It's still happening but not as much.
