Garage Door Opening by Itself...

I have had the MyQ Garage installed for less than 6 hours now. I was super exited to get this product added to my smart home setup. Now, I find myself on a ladder at 1:00am uninstalling it because my garage door won't stop opening by itself.

My bedroom sits directly above my garage; so, with a chain driven LiftMaster opener, I know every time the garage door is opened because my bedroom floor shakes.

I was awakened 2 times tonight by the sound of my garage door opening. In 10 years, I've never had a problem with the opener until the night I installed this product.

Here's the weird part. After opening itself the 2nd time tonight, I unplugged it from the power outlet. A few minutes later, the door opened again! I then got the ladder back out and took it and the door sensor down and deleted the device from the app. Knock on wood...it hasn't happened again since.

Anyone else have similar issues? Why would it open again even after cutting the power to the device? This happened late at night, when none of my neighbors would have been using their openers, so I doubt it's any interference from them.

Got home from work today to find my gate wide open again. Nobody has been here all day. I'm sure a company rep will come along soon and say that this is "phantom operation" and can be caused by wires shorting out on the back of the wall controller, or by a neighbor's remote somehow being programmed to my opener.

In my case, there's a big problem with each of those:

1. I have no wall controller wired to my gate opener. It's just two remotes and the MyQ unit which all communicate wirelessly.

2. One of the first troubleshooting steps I performed months ago when the problem first occurred was to set the system to "forget" all remotes and then manually re-add them.

I work in a technical field where we design cybersecurity controls into all of our products (mandated by our customers). My suspicion is that Chamberlain has a major cyber vulnerability or at a minimum, sloppy controls over the infrastructure and networks which manage the MyQ service on their end. This issue started for me almost immediately after installing the MyQ gateway.

If I were Chamberlain, I would start by hiring a third party entity to perform a complete top-down assessment of their IT security protocols and practices. Something stinks here, and at this rate it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or killed by a moving gate or garage door as a result of this issue.

I doubt we'll get much of a response from the company, but for now I'd urge everyone to get the word out, report the issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies.

I found this site searching for a solution to the same issue.  I have 3 8500's, and a few weeks ago door 3 was found open in the morning.  No alert on my phone, as far as the app was concerned, the door was still closed.    I closed the door with the wall controller, only to watch the door open back up almost immediately.   I removed the two wires from the wall unit and the door continued to open and close.   I manually locked the door and went about my day.   I have been manually opening and closing door 3 for the last few weeks.   Doors 1 and 2 are operating nominally.  All three are about 3.5 years old.

From all I've read, I still do not understand if this is a MyQ issue or a controller board on the 8500 issue.

I've been trying to resolve this for some time now with no successf chamberlain has replaced my wall units and myq box and still this annomally exists . Doing my own research talking to installers the circuit board in the opener is faulty. This I have not changed yet but I'm getting really tired of the amount of time I have spent on this with no solution to the problem . The support from chamberlain is very time consuming and this is a common occurrence with these myq openers

changed motor control board on my dime and seems OK for now. i can only test this when home and i disconnect 1 wire off wall control when i leave . this is a real pain and without a for sure know fix; how can you trust these when you leave? still haven't got app working but it didn't inform you when door opened when it wasn't supposed to
anyway into this thing for another 150$ and a lot of wasted time.  i wonder if a person should wire the control wire with shielded wiring, maybe picking up interference with all these apps out there.that will be my last try before i remove the whole system and replace it with some thing else. i went through their trouble shooting list as well

Wow, my Chamberlain which was installed in 2005 just had its logic board fail. Since a new board is equal to the price of an entire opener (price fixing anyone???) I WAS planning on just buying another Chamberlain (or Liftmaster or Craftsman - they're all made by the same company). After hearing all the problems with phantom operation, I'll be looking at another manufacturer. Glad I didn't make the mistake of wasting $200 on an opener that will result in thousands of dollars of theft.

Simple explanation is it should work out of the box. Without my becoming an electronics repairman. But It doesn’t. You won’t replace it or refund it.

Final follow-up....the wall control unit was installed today and everything is back to normal.
Looking at the brighter side of this situation, at least Chamberlain provides a website with information for owners and actually responds to the comments. Am I happy with garage door opening in the middle of the night? No, but I can think of several companies that don't even honor their warranty much less have an open forum like this site.

I too have been experiencing "phantom operation" for many months months now.  I have woken up in the morning to hundreds of alerts with my door opening and closing over and over throughout the night while sleeping.  This is a HUGE SECURITY RISK, and Chamberlain needs to figure out what is causing this issue since it appears to be widespread with MANY PEOPLE experiencing it.  The only solution for me is to ENABLE the remote lock feature on the control panel.  This makes it so no remotes are able to open the garage, yet allowing it to still operate.  When enabled, the button on the control panel can still open and close the garage, as well as using the myq app, but it is a pain to have to use these methods instead of being able to click a remote.  This makes me think it is not an issue with the wall control panel, since when the lock is enabled, it would still open the garage.  It also wouldn't be an issue with MyQ, since I am still able to open and close the garage with the MyQ app when lock is enabled, but I don't experience this issue anytime lock is enabled.  I didn't pay all that money for a garage door opener, to have to use some ridiculous workaround, to ensure the safety of my family. I WILL NEVER BUY A CHAMBERLAIN/LIFT MASTER product ever again, and will make sure to tell as many friends, family members, coworkers, etc. about the problems with their products and why they shouldn't purchase them either.  Chamberlain/Lift master can't even resolve these issues, threatening the security of many people.  As you can see, many people have already experienced theft and other problems associated with this "Phantom Operation" issue, and it completely defeats the purpose of owning a garage door opener, if you are constantly worried that it will open on its own during all times of the day.    For Chamberlain/Liftmaster to trying to potentially blame these things on a neighbors remote accidentally being programmed to openers is laughable.  I assure that my neighbors aren't all night pushing their garage remote over and over hundreds and hundreds of times, and I am willing to bet that isn't happening with the thousands of people experiencing this issue.

For those that have this problem, are you using led bulbs in the opener. I was using generic led bulbs and when I switched to the approved opener led bulb my phantom opening went away.

I have a feeling that power bumps may be screwing things up as well with the circuit board. Just in case i put a whole house surge suppressor to circumvent this. Yes another 200$ to maybe stop this phantom operation. I have wasted so much time with this that i'm pretty much maxed out. Chamberlain response is killing me . I'm using C-clamp on door track with rope pulled and its getting real tiring. I'm surprised they answer so fast on this but my luck is horrible.temped to take everything off and send it to them collect shipping . Steve b Lauren waiting for your call!!!!!!!!!!

In my situation, I have two newer garage door openers with two separate wall mounted panels, wired separately, and both doors opened in the middle of the night. It can’t be two separate wall mount panel issues. And it can’t be a neighbor’s remote opening both doors. And I don’t have anything connected to the web So it sure does make me wonder how I can have any confidence in these keeping my garage secure.

This doesn't help. We have two separate garage doors, less than 100 days old, that just opened last night, unprompted. Since these should have two SEPARATE logic board, I fail to see how stuck buttons or neighbor activations could be at fault for doors that have rotating codes. . .

A year ago I had the same problem with the garage doors opening by itself and the best solution offered is to use internet gateway instead of their sensor that you stick on to the door. So I removed them and purchased gateways and there were no issues so far. It is huge security risk not sure why Chamberlain wasn't able to address. More over they can see the how the call is initiated on their servers to see if the call is initiated by user or not.

My garage door has been opening randomly at all hours. I decided to buy the internet gateway so I could at least know when this is happening and react accordingly. Stopped for a while but then again yesterday at 3am the door opened. The MyQ app shows an entry every minute for about 20-25 entries of the door being opened.

I am having a similar issue.  I have two 8355W garage door openers with manufacturer date of 05/25/17.  They were installed by the builder of this new townhouse I now live in.  I cleared the memory on both openers two days ago and reprogrammed the 2 wireless openers.  I started having phantom door openings the very next day including some that do not show up in the app.  I have to shut off the breaker to the two garage door openers to prevent phantom openings.  There are no stuck buttons, lose wires, etc.  I have already followed all the troubleshooting recommendations.  It seems likely the problem lies with remote access to the doors via the internet......very scary.  Please have a specialist contact me on Monday.  You may contact through the email address associated with this account.

I was about to buy 2 of these units, and I am so glad that I found this information beforehand. I have absolutely zero tolerance for a garage door opening without my finger being on the button, and no time to deal with customer service that sounds like an absolute broken record, or worse, Lauren's inquiry to how frequently does this occur? I will take ya'lls advice and steer clear of this company which obviously cares nothing for our safety or our valuables. Thank you so much for the information and advice!

mine started 2 days ago, it started when I enabled the 90 min auto close feature, after a few hours I noticed the door was open, thought that was odd, I reviewed the security cameras and no one opened it, then I closed it, a few hours later, open again, and then the system was not sending me alerts that it was opening or closing, so I was watching on my cameras and closed the door with my App, it closed, I changed the setting to alert me as soon as it happens and not if open for 10 minutes, I tuned off the 90 minutes remote door close feature and still it oped a few hours later. and bam, a few hours later, the door is open, no alerts. The system is around I think just over 1 year old. I just disabled all remotes from working to see if this cured the issue, but serious, how in this day and age of is DSM technology not being used on this system? "In geekspeak, DSM technology is an optimized version of Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum, also referred to as FHDSS "frequency hopping digital spread spectrum" technology. This optimized digital, crystal-free two-way communication technology eliminates and is immune to the cross-interference common with traditional radio frequency transmitters and receivers."  This would make thousands of channels and no one is going to have yours, the chance would be in the millions. I doubt its a Remote by a neighbor anyway since I got no alerts on my phone when it opened.   if it opens again with my Remotes Disabled int he door device then I will kill the gateway and see. I just hope it does not happen when I am away.

Hello,
I am having the same problem now. All seemed fine previously, until I reprogrammed everything for one door.  I have 2 keychain remotes that we use, one for each person.  I just replaced my wife's keychain remote battery, and also had to replace the battery on the MyQ sensor, and go through the programing process for that door, and now the door is opening randomly at all hours!  I get the alert that the door stayed open, and I close it.  I just checked with my wife and she is no where near the house, but the door opened! This is twice this afternoon! and the 5th time since I replaced batteries in 2 days. I have the link from above for debugging and I will go through it tonight, but reprogramming the door again when it is bitterly cold out is a pain.

Ours also happened nearly 2 years ago (7/2016). While hundreds of miles away, received an alert that our garage door had opened. Had to have a family member go over to confirm and sure enough, the garage door (and access to our home) was wide open. We travelled back and traced the trouble to the wall unit. As frequent as this appears to be happening, Chamberlain really needs to step up and resolve, recall or whatever is needed before some poor family has an unwelcome visitor wander into their home. To add insult to injury, the company profits while we purchase fixes for what is apparently a poorly designed and unreliable product.

Just as a heads up I had this happen to me today. I noticed that before the garage door swung open I recv'd a Garage status of 'unknown' in the app just before the open. No one was near it and no one really has been reprogramming remotes near it.  Does anyone have an idea on what a status of unknown means? I called support and also asked if any third party apps had used the API's. Apparently they do not track or log anything on API usage which I think is a broad security issue. Should their API's become compromised they are basically saying they have no way of tracking that. Not even tracking a IP address or an APP seems like a large security audit issue to me.

We have a Liftmaster 8500 opener, myQ wall unit and two 3-button remotes.

My wife woke up this morning to find our garage door open. She closed it with the remote then asked me later if I'd left it open last night (I was sure I hadn't). When we walked over to the garage, it was wide open again.

The wall unit didn't respond to any button pushes. So I pulled the disengage cord, closed the door manually, and slid the bolt into place figuring I'd get around to this problem later. Just to check, I pushed the wall unit button again. Nothing, but then a few seconds later, the opener started making noises. Like it was trying to engage but then realizing the manual disengage cord had been pulled. Then a few second later, it'd try again, stop, then repeat. I unplugged the whole thing as the bolt had been unlocked

A theft would haven't devastated us as we store all our tools of the trade for our small business, not to mention other items of varying personal value. As others have posted, how can I trust this system now? It fails in garage open position?

I'm shutting my device off. I run a web cam inside my garage and can see it all because I have it recorded. The door just opens and closes on its own, and sometimes indicates its opening and closing but doesn't actually go through the cycle. Simply cannot operate a device that is not reliable.

That’s where the wemo switch comes in only security I have as these guys from chamberlain send you on a wild reprogramming, wiring and part replacement none of which actually fix the problem I have threw away countless hours of wasted time for almost 2 years now. They pretty much wore me down I’m just done with their false promises and no security I have too much to lose with garage doors opening on their own
