I have had the MyQ Garage installed for less than 6 hours now. I was super exited to get this product added to my smart home setup. Now, I find myself on a ladder at 1:00am uninstalling it because my garage door won't stop opening by itself.

My bedroom sits directly above my garage; so, with a chain driven LiftMaster opener, I know every time the garage door is opened because my bedroom floor shakes.

I was awakened 2 times tonight by the sound of my garage door opening. In 10 years, I've never had a problem with the opener until the night I installed this product.

Here's the weird part. After opening itself the 2nd time tonight, I unplugged it from the power outlet. A few minutes later, the door opened again! I then got the ladder back out and took it and the door sensor down and deleted the device from the app. Knock on wood...it hasn't happened again since.

Anyone else have similar issues? Why would it open again even after cutting the power to the device? This happened late at night, when none of my neighbors would have been using their openers, so I doubt it's any interference from them.

Bobby - I am really sorry that you are having a problem with your door opening on it's own. The symptom that you have described is called "Phantom Operation". There are a few things that can cause this type of problem. The most common cause is: possibly caused by a neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener. When you programmed the MyQ Garage to your opener you had to put it into program mode. 

You will need to clear the memory of your opener and then reprogram your remotes. I have included instructions: Why does my garage door opener activate on its own?

This is not resolving the issue, I cleared the codes and even removed the battery in both the wall mounted opener and the keychain opener to rule out circuitry issues so I have been relying only in the MyQ app

Yesterday it happened twice, last time I had to got up yesterday at 11:30PM to reset the codes again and close the door because it opened by itself one more time (no other neighbors operating their doors in the block) and I just happened again this morning, very annoying, nothing has been stolen so far but I wonder how far Chamberlain accountability goes if someone's property gets stolen or damaged (by thieves, animal or nature) because this is being reported for more than a year and no real solution has been provided yet.

Reliability is key here, we are trusting Chamberlain with a key of our houses and they are not taking this seriously and our homes and family security are getting exposed due to a "glitch" they haven't been able to figure out?   This more serious than just a product not working properly.

The garage door has opened by itself 9 TIMES!!! so far since 9AM to 1PM and all I can do from work is watch hopeless and wait for it to fully opened to close it again using the MyQ app, unbelievable!

You probably are being hacked thru your app as what your doing is all *in the cloud* which you think you control it but you don't really.   As soon as you installed the app someone likely figured out your frequency to the garage door and is able to access it now.  This is why I will NEVER have a *smart* house.  Luckily it's not your smart fridge this is happening or your smart oven and instead just a stupid garage door which is annoying as hell but not life threatening.


Good luck getting thru on most help forum these days Carlos.
 They use smartphones and with a small screen can only see one ITTY BITTY line at a time so assume your problem is a common one without reading fully the detailed explanations.  

 Looking at help/technical forums is best with a laptop/computer so minutes aren't used up then you can be clear and concise without worrying about this or that.  That is one of many reasons smartphones will never replace PC's despite what the industries are trying.

PS. How would you like it if your fridge started opening and closing by itself or turned off at random times or your oven.etc?  It could get really scary and like street lights there is little protection beyond default passwords and a basic firewall if at that.

  A lot of traffic signals and level crossing gates,etc that are low powered equipment only have the default password if any at all many do not.   Studies shown these equipment are still super easy to break into.  A lot of control panels are not even locked.

So this is what I got my neighbor is having the same issue opening by it self; She does not have hers hooked up to the Internet so that pushes out hacking ; and we noticed when the motions which is disconnected and she only uses her wireless push button to open and close the garage we have no issues will let that do that for a couple days no problems once the motion switch put back in place started doing it again; it's a flaw with either the switch itself or the garage opener it self

This is still an issue as of September 2017.  It is not the MyQue.  I have isolated my door to a faulty method of the manufacture making the Garage door button assembly which has a circuit card in it.  
Through process of elimination I disconnected the garage door button and used a remote to open and close the door for a month.  No issues.  I noticed that the circuit board was used as the contact point for the wires, which used a screw through the circuit card into plastic as a mount. Over time this kind of connection will expand and contract due to temperature changes.  
I put the switch back in place, but made sure the wire under the screw was very snug and no problems have been seen for another month.  
It would cost a little more to produce, but if knurled inserts were used in the plastic then machined screws could be used to better hold the wire and circuit wire in place.  For now  I am going to just check those wires once a year to make sure the connections are still good.  I may even solder them in once the warranty runs out.

Hi All,  Well my garage door opened again the other night. so back to troubleshooting.  Since it was midnight I just removed the switch which stopped it.  The next day,  I put the switch back in and moved the MyQ as far from the control card on the opener and the push button to see if the circuit may be picking up rf energy on the wires.  I really do not think this is happening but wanted to eliminate it in the process.So far the button on the wall seems to be the biggest problem.
I would like to know from Chamberlin if there is an alternate button like  simple pushbutton that I can replace the one with the circuit card?

This is happening to me as well. It seems that my neighbors garage door opener operates on the same frequency as mine. It appears that even after trying to reset the garage door opener, I need to replace/upgrade my Sears door opener. I will never buy or recommend a chamberlain product again!

Update, with remotes ruled out, went and disconnected wall control, less than 20 minutes and it went again. Your link then says it would be reciever board correct?

I have a my q system on my commercial roll up door for well over a year, mind you I have a full fabrication shop behind that door. The door has opened by it self twice now . I was in denial that it opened by itself, I figured that I must have had the app open and whatever. So, the other night the police show up to my home telling me my shop door was open. I was sleeping....

this maker of garage door openers is the worst.....these cant be trusted and their support is a total joke. Still screwing around with mine after 2 years.Support is going to waste a lot of your time and money because they just don't know ,  be forewarned. sorry for bad news all the best.

I went on vacation and came home to an opened garage with normal unlocked doors leading into my home. This security breach has me out of place. I have erased and reprogrammed the unit and will work from home the next several days to monitor the effectiveness of the suggested solution.

Same here, just installed on Saturday and thought it could be our remote keypad but took the battery out of that and it's still happening. Our dog got out unbeknown to us and ran the neighborhood. I'm wondering if Chamberlain is prepared for the liability if she gets run over next time. What kind of crap is this? Apparently this problem is nothing new and looks like nothing is being done. We live in a country neighborhood where everyone has 5 acres - the closest neighbor is thousands of feet away. Not possible it is cross coded.

Chamberlain just needs to admit none of their products work properly and can't be fixed it's not a phantom causing the problem it's obvious that their software is bad poor product assembly and programming they need eed to refund everyone. I'm sick of the problems with their opener and remotes which aren't cheap. On A scale of 1-10 I rate you a negative -1000 for customer service and product issues. Man up and admit your products and services suck. I'm getting g a new garage door opener one like Sears or Craftsman they start d behi d their products and services 100% with full refund or replacement hassle free. Shame on you Chamberlain.

We have had our Chamberlain opener perhaps 4-5 years and never had the "phantom opening" occur until just this past weekend (7/23/2016). While hundreds of miles away I received a garage open alert on my smartphone. I had a family member go past to assure nothing was disturbed but upon arriving home on 7/25/2016, I erased all codes and reprogrammed both remotes. Within 15 minutes, the phantom opening occurred again. For the time being I set the door to close If open after 1 minute. Apparently it is not due to another opener since all codes were erased and reprogrammed. Even as I write this, I have received alerts of the door closing (due to the 1 minute timer). Oddly there is no alert showing the door opening at all.

i just started having this same issue starting yesterday afternoon around 1pm. but my phone won't close the door remotely and even my physical wall mounted opener won't work right now. but both of my vehicles integrated openers work fine.
i have had no issues with mine for the past few years until yesterday.\

is there a virus or some hack that caused this issue?

It was explained to me that it had to be the wall control, wire short, or a fault y board in the opener itself. I isolated the issue by removing or disconnecting the wall control. Once disconnected, the "phantom" openings stopped. After replacing the wall control, operation has been normal.

I ORDERED A NEW WALL MOUNT UNIT AND THAT DID THE TRICK!
now everything is working again and the door no longer opens by its self. i could see that the contact points where the positive and negative wires attach to the wall mount unit were worn thin on the old unit.  i suspect that is why it worked at random. after swapping the units out, it worked like a charm!

I have a Chamberlain 1hps belt drive opener (Model WD850KEVG) which has been installed for six month now. Last night we had the same issue. When my 15 year old walked up the driveway, the door came up on its own. I will try the method listed above. It's a great, quiet opener! I love the features, and bought it at Home Depot.

Mine opened itself and a thief stole my expensive scooter. It's done this about 5 Times now. I'm extreamy dissatisfied with this unit as you can imagine

Mine also opened by itself and my 5 day old lawnmower, brand new trimmer, power washer, and a few others things were also stolen. Now u just leave it unplugged.

Same here--Liftmaster8500 opening on it's own after 4 years of service--this is an unacceptable fail for a product homeowners rely on for security.  Luckily I didn't have anything stolen before I realized the damn thing was opening on it's own and I turned off the circuit breaker...........

As a final insult, I had a local contractor come out and install a new control panel on the wall--apparently the board had gone bad and the whole wall mounted control panel needed replaced.  Total charge for parts and labor was $250.  I was still under warranty for the opener and contacted Chamberlain about getting a refund for the service or at least the cost of the part.  They promptly informed me that having the work done before contacting them voided my warranty!  What a joke this company is.  They told me they had no proof of service at my property and seemed confused when I offered to send a copy of the service report which would clearly show what I paid for the replacement parts which are covered by the warranty.  Next time this thing fails that's it.  I'm having it replaced with another brand and making sure that none of my friends, family, co-workers, etc. will ever purchase a Chamberlain product.  Their customer service is awful and they don't honor their warranties on their products..............buyer beware!!!!!!

I cant believe Chamberlain hasn't addressed this issue yet.  I have the same problem as Bobby.  I installed the MyQ then after waking up in the middle of the night to an opened door, I uninstalled it the next day.  The next night my door was open again so now I have to fix the whole opener evidently...  Not only did their product not work correctly, it screwed with my existing opener and now that doesn't work correctly.

This just happened to me this evening for the first time, after three years of successful use. My son and I heard the garage door mysteriously opening and closing. I unplugged the MyQ internet connection device, and it still kept happening. So I put the wall switch in "lock" mode, slid the metal latch on the garage into the locked position, and detached the garage door from the carrier. Not sure what is going on.

Same thing is happened to me today at 630 am 11/18/17. Up and down over and over. It’s definitely the switch. Scary that this happened. What if i was out of town! Very upset. I’ll warn others I know who have the myq system.

I received an alert that my garage door opened while my wife and I were about 20 miles away.  I have my garage door as a zone on my home alarm and the alarm company notified me that zone 6 was open (garage door).  I checked my MyQ app and sure enough it showed the garage door had been open for 3 minutes.  I immediately shut it.  When we got home the police where there and all doors and windows were locked.  I'd really like to know what caused this, from looking at the comments above it appears that you have a problem with your garage doors.  I have model:  LW9000WFi

My garage opener is opening itself the for the third time in two days, I cleared the previous codes and reprogrammed both remotes, and still, not resolved. Now I m leaving it unplugged.

I can't believe Chamberlain hasn't addressed this issue after all this negative feedback.
I m so disappointed with the slow response of their customer care; I have to replace it with a different brand. I don't know if I can trust this brand anymore with the safety of my family.

I have been having this issue for weeks as well. I have reprogrammed everything and then 2 days later it started again. Yesterday if opened and closed 8 times in an hour.  Unplugging the myQ from the power didn't seem to fix it. I have unplugged the Ethernet cable from the router and so far it hasn't opened for the last several hours.

WTH I had mine installed last Friday and it has happened twice this week, called Chamberlain and they say reset the codes, well that doesn't seem to work.  I didn't install the app until the following Tuesday after the install and the door opened Wednesday and Friday this week.  Not sure if it's the MyQ or possibly someone else's opener is opening mine.  Chamberlain says there also is a possibility of wires shorting in the  wall controller sending signals to the door.  I would think it would have happened more than twice.  Strange thing as well, it seems to only happen in the morning.

Wow. Same issue... Only it's happening to a client of mine.
Installed the MyQ with app on Thursday, and on Monday had reports of door opening on Saturday at 1am. Went to check it out on Monday, couldn't spot the issue, but the control had burnt out. Replaced the control on Tuesday, and "Phantom Opening" started happening on another door, and that control seems to have fried as well. I've since removed all the garage doors from the MyQ site. So far, no phantom openings. 

I'm starting to think that there may have been some compromised security at Chamberlain and someone is having a good time. It's the only thing that makes sense after reading all of these similar stories.

Will update with any progress.

Had a similar incident today.  I have a MyQ internet gateway set up with my Chamberlain garage door opener and sliding gate operator.  My wife called me at work and said our sliding gate had suddenly opened and closed by itself several times in a row (sometimes opening all the way, sometimes getting mid-way and then reversing closed).  I tend to agree with Peter on this one... it almost looks like a security compromise or other glitch in the system on Chamberlain's end may be to blame here.  This is a serious issue because of the security concerns others have mentioned, but also for me personally as I have toddlers who often play in our back driveway near the gate.  The gate suddenly moving unexpectedly would be a major safety hazard.  Chamberlain needs to address this ASAP or else they are opening themselves up to huge liability issues.

Well, I found out what was causing mine to go nuts. I had a garage door guy come out and he walked right over to the remote openers that are mounted on the wall and started taking them off and the doors started going nuts. Yep, It was the wires in the back on the remote openers. There are only 2 wires but they were not secure. The guys said he sees it all the time. the wires have to be put on properly and secure. I haven't had another issue. Hope this helps.

My wires are not loose. I disabled the FOBs and it stopped opening

I have the same issue in my chamberlain. I am not going to buy this stupid product anymore.

same issue. randomly been opening and closing. has anyone else been able to get this fixed via the wires that Mike Manley mentions above?

I had this and solved it by follwing their diagnosis steps and determining the opener logic board was the issue. Got a replacement board and problem is solved. Opener would spuriously open at all times, and over the last few days frequency of spurious opening was increasing. New board for my 8 year old chamberlain whisper drive was 90$ and very easy to replace.

Here is the link. I am in Canada so this worked best for me, but i am sure there are US ones too. Please note that I still recommend you follow all the chamberlain diagnosis steps first because other failures can cause this such as bad wiring, led bulbs, etc. As described in the link, you need the board model number from the side of the opener to match. The revision letter can be different and the higher the letter, the more recent the board. For example, my original failed board was a rev D, and the new board was a rev G. Good instructions are included with the board, and of course all of your remote accessories will have to be re- paired to the new board. Good luck!

We apologize your garage door is operating on its own.  There are a few things that can cause this type of problem. The most common causes are: a neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener, a stuck button on a remote control, or a shorted wall-mounted door control sending unwanted signals to the garage door opener.

Just finished installing my WD962KEV opener. The door won't stay closed! I've reprogrammed three times with no improvement. I will call Chamberlain if further tinkering doesn't help. But at this point, considering the above posts and the value of even minimal equipment most of us store in our garages, it strikes me that a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT may be our best bet.

We apologize you are experiencing "Phantom Operation."  I wanted to let you know there are a few things that can cause this type of problem. The most common causes are:

1. A neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener
2. A stuck button on a remote control
3. A shorted wall-mounted door control sending unwanted signals to the garage door opener

In this day and age, You're still using a system that has a certain amount of channels that are the same as others?  How are you not using spread spectrum and digital keys for each that are unique? Even Remote controls for RC cars do not do this anymore, they all use DSM - You guys need a new Tech to remake your stuff. I just started getting this Phantom Opening 2 days ago. I will run thru some troubleshooting but I  set the door to ignore the remotes, for now, to see if that is it.

It's happening to me too for the last week.  Mine is a 2003 model.  I was told it is one of 3 things:
1: short in the door button
2: short in the wires
3: Bad Circuit board which is my guess.  Wires don't just go bad.  

Going thru process of elimination now.

This is ridiculous I had the worst technical support ever they try to blame it on the wires blame it on somebody at conveniently driving by and synchronizing there quicker to your garage door opener at the very moment you push the alarm button highly unlikely .

It have to be a mic you if you because I'm looking at the log file a normal cycle for the garage door is open closed and it sends an alert open closed if you push a button it opens it and then if you push that button again and it closes it if I wire shorts out it would open it and then it would close it that's normal ---//but when the log file history it's says

I'm pretty surprised there hasn't been a lawsuit against this company yet. My 888LM wall controller was the issue and it randomly opened the garage door at all times of the day/night and finally just stopped working altogether. This is not what the rep is calling "Phantom Operation". A reputable company should admit to the problem and do a product recall. But without a class action suit, there's nothing to motivate them to do so.

Not sure who makes what, but my Crapsman does the same thing now. And Crapsman won't answer the phone.

Agreed.  If anything is stolen from my garage during such an incident there will in fact be a lawsuit.  "Phantom operation" is a nice little term for massive product fail and breach of homeowner trust and security.

another wall mount failed (this is my last one) wouldn't open door until i replaced it. lower light still flashing continuously as it did with last control box i suspect control is going or gone on opener #2 which had control board changed. more trips up ladder. the motor board needs change out asap. thx

both wall controls were changed still same problem. motion detection camera only way i was first alerted to this.
