Garage door opening by itself. Phantom Opening.

Garage door opening by itself. Woke up bright early morning few days ago and found garage door open. Family and I got really scared. Thank God, Every night I check the door leading to the garage is locked. And today, door is opening and closing incessantly. Had to pull the plug off and disconnect the backup battery to get it to stop. My son is in wheelchair and I need to use the garage door on a daily basis. Garage door opener was installed only a year and half ago. Will Chamberlain cover this under warranty ?. I have called the garage door technician that installed it to come and take a look tomorrow.

I had a phantom opening last night. I was asleep and heard my phone notification go off. Got up to check and my garage door was wide open. Thought something else might be going on only to find this has been a common problem.

My HD900D is opening randomly either over night or during the day for no apparent reason.  I have checked all connections and they are all tight or reseated in the clamp.  Do I need a new logic PCB?  This is not a App/internet opener.

I’m really tired of this whole mess mine still not working properly and very poor support was asked to re wire openers in new build at my expense and numerous reprogramming. Just using wemo switch ; but have to go through house when re powering unit to open door ; not quite what I had in mind when these were purchased for house. I have never been so fed up with a product before and I think chamberlain just wears us down till we give up

Its pretty sad that the only thing you offer is reprogram your opener and check for stuck buttons, there is something fundamentally wrong obviously.  I am an engineer so I followed the reprogramming instructions, that went fine.  I also was curious about interference to the opener's receiver causing this.  (Older HD900D). So i took a walk and 5-6 houses later I could still open the door.  There is no need for that much range.  I also have a radio background, and the antenna does not need to be almost 2 foot long.  I cut it down several times to minimize range and wound up at 4" approximately.  Now their car has to be in the driveway and the opener only has a range of 2 houses away.  This may help with interference to the receiver, time will tell. OK so far.  Shorten the Antenna!

I experienced the same problem trying to order the newer 888LM, there is no "Coupon Code" field.  I guess the credit card is to pay shipping?  After all we have been through? Probably costs $1-3 to use the USPS.  Where is the coupon code field??

Two of my four doors just started "volunteering" this week.  Up down and some "stopped" messages when the door never opened.  I power cycled the 824LM after the first door started acting up.  Now I've pulled the plug until I can see if others are having this problem.

Write a replySo these posts go back years and they still haven't done anything to fix this problem? I have 3 from the 8500 series, I am appalled at the amount of headaches these units have been giving me. One needs to have the up and down limits and force limits reprogrammed a few times a year. 2 of them decide to periodically open all by themselves for no reason. Sometimes it will start to go down and then go back up so you can't pull away from the house anymore until you see it closed. So far I have changed all 3 remotes, a wall switch and a circuit board. I have spent countless hours on the phone with their inept service staff to the point of losing my cool. To wake up in the morning and realize you went to sleep with your garage door open all night is a serious issue, as is coming home and finding your garage door is open.If any lawyers are on this board or anyone wants to start a class action lawsuit, I would like to be first on the list. This company needs to fix this VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE immediately, start offering REAL fixes or refunds. If I am not contacted by a company rep, my next step will be to contact every consumer advocacy group, news media and consumer protection agencies I can find and make sure they don't get away with this. They are STILL selling the same defective units, knowing full well the problems they have, this must be escalated......

It sounds like this happens for many reasons.  In my case, I have the 828LM Internet Gateway, so I can use my mobile devices to monitor and operate my doors.  In the past week, two different doors have started acting independently.  Since it is two doors in two different structures, I suspect my gateway rather than the wall button.  I have a second gateway at a vacation home where the doors are not acting up, so my local gateway is the likely suspect.  I was wondering if Liftmaster has a software bug or if the system as been hacked into by the usual bunch of bad actors...or if I just have a defective gateway.  I power cycled it after the first door acted oddly, but a different door acted up subsequent to my power cycle.

If you have an Internet Gateway for your door(s), you might try disconnecting the power from the gateway to see if that stops the spontaneous behavior.  I unplugged mine last night to see if that solves the problem and so far, it has, but it has only been 12 hours.

To be clear.  I do NOT have the WiFi controller, so NO...this has nothing to do with WiFI.

Further, I turned off my 828LM (which is a hard wired gateway which does not use WiFi) and my garage door problem persisted after 24 hours.  (My post after 12 hours was invalidated and I neglected to update it until now.)  That pointed me clearly at the wall control since the 828LM had been eliminated from the equation.

The 888LM Wall Control had what appeared to be a leaky capacitor.  I have replaced it and the problem has been corrected.  Chamberlain sent me replacement wall controls.

To all consumers with phantom opening problems with their liftmaster garage door openers. I personally own 3 from the 8500 series and have been dealing with this phantom opening problem for years. Phantom opening is when your garage door opens and closes all by itself. Like many of you, I have come home and or woken up in the morning to find out that my garage door opened all by itself, VERY scary and unsafe for many obvious reasons. I have spent many HOURS of grief on the phone with their technical people and have tried many different attempts at fixing this including but not limited to changing remotes, rewiring, reprogramming, changing circuit boards etc. This morning, I was able to ‘catch’ the door going up and down dozens of times by itself which I captured on video.

The myQ wall control is the culprit people. I am an electronic technician by trade and decided to do a little troubleshooting myself. The copy and paste solutions the company keeps posting is a joke and they obviously have no respect for people’s time and safety. Call them and have them send you a new myQ programmable wall switch. I disconnected mine and the door stopped going up and down by itself. After dis-assembling I quickly noticed that capacitor C1 and C18 are leaking causing a short in the circuitry which is making the door go up and down. This is a common problem on electronic circuit boards nowadays and is most likely due to the cheap inferior capacitors being used. I would like to admonish the company for not figuring this out on their own and caring so little about the safety of their customers.

New myQ programmable wall switch does the trick ?
I just got a Chamberlain B750 @ Home Depot to replace my killed LiftMaster. It goes up while I'm gone. Surprised I still have bikes.
I wish my old LiftMaster remotes would operate it.
Maybe my old LiftMaster wall button will work better than the smart + fancy crap ?

Two of my four doors have started erratic opening and closing.  Since I had two doors doing this, I suspected the 828LM Internet Gateway, but I unplugged that and after a few days, one of my doors again started going up and down.  The "learn" light was flashing on the control.  I disconnected it and the problem stopped.  I haven't pulled the circuit board out yet to look at the component side of the board.

If Chamberlain would fix their website that tells you they extended the warranty on the inside wired remote, now 888LM. You could order a free replacement. But no...you have to call their Tech Support now to get the fix at no charge.

Tech support reached out to me and has committed to ship replacements to me.

Ever since I removed this 888LM, the second door that also acted up once, has not acted up.  I wonder if the 888LMs can interfere with each other when they go bad or if my other controller is just starting to show the symptoms and will do so again.

Well, you all can add me to the list!  I woke up to my garage door opened this morning, thinking it must have been my forgetfulness, I found that fifteen min ago (6:45pm) I could hear my garage door opening by itself!  I'm the only one in my house!  Very concerning!  I hit the lock button...I am REALLY hoping that will help!

I just started having this problem. I am thinking it's my phone initiating it for some reason... no one has mentioned that. Maybe we can start including some info like phone OS and what type of email acct we have associated. I got a new laptop this week and use the same email acct as i do on myQ app for my new laptop acct. Im learning toward all of this may be related .. not sure why it would be but too coincidental to me. When i checked my phone today to make sure garage was closed, a second later it opened... it had been closed for 4 hrs with out issue. I had already layed my phone down and closed it out when the chime went off. The day before it opened on its own 4 separate times, once when i was driving home from an errand. No issue with this until yesterday....

Phone OS- Android phone galaxy 8s+
myQ acct - Gmail email

Tempted to chg myQ email to a different email as a test, next wil be husband checking on the circuits as other person indicated.

Read through all the posts. There is no cure per se. The last thing i want is my opener on WiFi for hackers to get to. Shorten your antenna to 4-6 inches to reduce range and possible interfering signals. I had to remove the wall unit and replace it with a doorbell button. So far so good.

I am personally very disgusted by this whole thing. I have a brand new home with a brand new listmaster Q garage opener. I have had nothing but problems since getting it and told them it was going up-and-down on its own. The company locally here in the Tampa area kept trying to tell me I was doing something to the sensor's. Well I'm a pretty educated woman and I even replaced the circuit board on my last garage door opener I know all well about the sensor's. But they keep telling me and the guy must have told me 6 times about the sensor. I was no where near it and then it still kept doing it.

They finally replaced it a week ago but they did not replace the panel on the wall. My garage door opened again several times. I've told them this is unsafe and that if something happens to me they're gonna be held accountable for my safety and security. The company is making it like I did something to programming and their guy programmed my remotes and my vehicle.

Then tonight the night before Thanksgiving, My doors open twice during the day. Yesterday I came home and my garage had been open all day so I set up the Wi-Fi to to be notified.

Tonight I was 20 miles away and had been gone for the house for 2 hours when I get an alert that my garage door opened. Someone needs to investigate and maybe news agency needs to get wind of it if they're not concerned about customer safety. I called Banko and they told me maybe when I set up my wifi I programmed to someone else. WTF that doesn't even make sense. Why would programming to someone else open MY home. And I did it because it opened repeatedly and I wanted a warning. Every excuse except the truth.

Apparently I'm just a dumb female who doesn't know how to work my garage door. Oh and apparently I can be a half hour away from home and hit a sensor. Very upset.

ok so today is November 28th.  I have had the overhead unit replaced.  They came back when it started again and replaced wall switch.  Well guess what with replacement of overhead unit AND wall switch, NOTHING worked.  I still have PHANTOM GARAGE OPENING.  It is becoming a nuissance.  I have to put in manual mode.  And then it is still saying it is happening and at times it is connecting itself.  I am at point where I may need to consult insurance company and legal.  How are these things not fixed.  it is a Contractor series, the book mentions the 8155W, 8164W and the 8165W as well as a 8160W.  So who knows.  Tried to look at unit and it is crazy.  This is a brand new house and Taylor Morrison is not doing anything to push it or replace with a better model.  Safety and Security are seriously getting compromised and possible damage to my door as well.

Update on my situation..
We're removed wall control, too rule out it being the issue. Garage continued to open randomly. To be clear our door was only opening, not closing on its own.
I called Chamberlain and they said it was the control board. They sent it out and arrived a couple days later, hubby installed it and wall mount, reprogrammed all remotes and it has been fine ever since. Our garage opener is about 4 years old. My suggestion is to make sure you use the app and set alerts so you are notified at least if you are away so you can close it. The day i called the company i esrd running errands all around town from 930 until 330. My garage opened 7 times during this time and i closed it with the app each time. It opened again as I was on hold for a rep to track my call. Good luck everyone, it was certainly scaring and frustrating and im surprised no one had been hurt or a class action suit going yet.

Count me in too. Installed my LiftMaster 8500 wall mounted unit just over a year ago. Just woke up this morning to find that my door was wide open, with my bikes, tools and equipment in plain sight, free to anybody who may have been walking by in the middle of the night. At first I thought that somebody in the house left it open but found that it doesn’t work at all now, which clearly indicates a malfunction (likely the same issue with the MyQ wall controller that Ron pointed out above). I was forced to release the latch and manually close the door and engage the deadbolt so I could get to work on time.

Did a little research to find that this is far too common a problem. WTF, LIFTMASTER/CHAMBERLAIN?! You got a SERIOUS issue here that requires real action, not just chalking it up to “Phantom openings due to cross signals with neighbors”. The odds that we are all experiencing cross signaling from neighbors as often as is being reported on this forum alone with units that roll codes is astronomical.

You guys need to take ownership of this defect and you need to take ownership of it months, no, YEARS ago.

I’ll be informing my insurance company of this issue to ensure LiftMaster/Chamberlain are held liable should I lose any belongings in the future

I don't believe it is an android issue at all.  It happened before I even knew I had the wifi on my new garage door opener so nothing was hooked up.  It ended up being a god send that I could tell when opened to close it.

For me the fix ended up being a totally new different model WAll Control Switch.  We had switched out the wall switch for same that went with new unit.  That didn't work and they had reprogrammed.

Then he tried a WIRELESS WAll control switch.  That seemed to do the trick. So when we saw that worked he upgraded my wall switch to a better model that was wired and had the digital readout.  No garage door openings since upgrading the WALL switch itself.

As an FYI to All We've replaced three over head units and two wall controls and it does not resolve it. Once the garage Tech installed a wireless wall control the random openings stopped. Once we figured it might have to do with the control he came back and we upgraded my wall control to one of the newer digital controls that I would never have probably got on my own. Since installing that wall control I've had no more Phantom openings. There is definitely something wrong on the communication between the control and that unit. I suggest upgrading your wall control and seeing if that helps after you reprogram everything

I have had no problems with my mom's 2 OLD Chamberlin Liftmaster garage door opener for 10yrs++ until several months age when one began "Phantom opening".  They are the same age, no wi fi, only a wall button, a remote opener, and home-link.  All the same for many years without problem until about 6 months ago when it occurred once.  Blamed on forgetfulness until it happened before my eyes.  Opening and closing on its own.  Called the local installer and gave me the fix to reprogram the remotes.  Then changed the wall switch. (it was the one used daily for many years). That seemed to do the trick for about 2 months then it started again.  Last night I had to pull the plug because it would't stop.  I have read the numerous post over the last 7 months and my frustration is escalating.  I was at a point of changing the whole unite but it seems more prevalent with the new high tech unites.  Anyone have a suggestion? The local dealer installer  is less than helpful.

I use Chrome/Google and select Google login for these posts. Otherwise you may need an account with the company that runs this forum. I was able to order my inside remote under warranty, used the coupon code and it asks for your credit card even though part and shipping are free. Probably a checkout programming bug they didnt think of. The coupon code goes to your email you specified on the first form you had to fill out. Ordering link is also in the email. Got an email saying my part is on its way.

To help console the people affected by the website issue, when the links worked I was able to finally get the inside remote ordered and it did arrive, not installed yet.
For those that don't want to wait, it was around $42-45.

I'm also having the phantom door opening and unable to get to the site through the link above, as it asks for login information I don't have. I also have the app but that information does not work on the link. Can you please let us know how to get onto the site for information about the replacement? Thank you.

FYI to anyone using this replacement panel link admin is supplying... the coupon code from the email is not working at checkout on their website. Says invalid. Also, I have 2 of these 8500 openers and myQ panels (3 car garage), does the coupon code work for ordering 2 replacements?

My original post didn’t submit, but I’m another victim of this phantom opening on the 8500 Liftmaster. Just started last week but I saved it on video on my Nest cam... opened several times, partway, all the way, closed itself, opened again. My wife, me, and both our remotes were 50 miles away at work. Video shows my dog getting out and running into the neighborhood in the rain and my classic car, motorcycle and all my goodies in the garage free for the taking for several hours til I could get home. The panel wasn’t working either so I had to manually close it.

This is seriously some BS and it’s funny how Chamberlain says “few” reported issues. I don’t think they’re addressing this properly, if not for liability than simply customer satisfaction. This is obviously a major defect and there’s enough of us on here seems it would be a great class action if anyone knows a good lawyer. Get us all on this post!

I saw your post that you got a replacement. I brought my lift master 8500w via Costco and the tech just replaced the sensors, wire, and wall unit. IT DID NOT WORK! I am so frustrated with this. Could it be my WiFi (AMPLIFI)? Is it the main unit? That’s the only thing that hasn’t been changed out. I’ve only had this for less than a year. Month 3-9, it would not close and I had to force it by holding the wall button to override it, the sensors would misaligned- which we later fixed as it was too close to a nearby furniture. Now? This phantom opening!!

If you have the Phantom opening issue you still need the newest remote, your tech might not be using it.  Website seems terminal, when I brought that to their attention they suggested calling tech support direct, then they will order it for you.  800-528-5880.  Newest remote looks different than all the previous versions.

Thanks for the info. When you say remotes, you are talking about the 2 external remotes in my car? Anything internal in the device. Reason I ask is that my garage has opened when both cars are not home, so both remotes were miles away from my garage.

No. The wired remote inside with light motion sensor on it. Known issue. 888LM.

Fred, what does your new wired remote look like? I received 2 replacements from them for this issue and they look identical to the old ones. Only thing I could see to discern them was a round blue sticker they put on the box and the back of the unit. I assumed this was to identify them as the “fixed” version

If the links worked on here you could see it on their Parts website. Biggest difference is no Lcd menu. Door button uncovers programming buttons. There are 3 Leds that show TTC timer countdown. 888LM.

Just started for me today.  Thought I'd completely lost it and left garage open all night, then I hear the door opening later, and go look, and lo and behold it's opening and closing all by itself.   I feel SOOOOO secure now.

You can add me to the list.  Whether it is a programming issue- that is too common and should be recalled/fixed.  My garage opener is less than a year old.  New technology should not have codes interfere with a neighbor - it's 2019!  If it is the circuit board, well, I am not an engineer but that should be recalled and fixed. I was so happy for getting this new garage door and opener and now I feel like I have an aged BMW bringing it in to service every other week.  YES! we need to initiate a class action law suit , and put my name down.

You can add me too. My garage door opened randomly, exposing my belongings to the entire neighborhood. I've have to cut the power to it and manually lock it so it doesn't keep opening randomly and now it's unusable

Add me to the class action lawsuit. This started happening to me yesterday. At first I was being told to cut wires and test the wiring versus acknowledging the well documented problem with the wall unit. After a 20-minute conversation the support specialist finally offered to send a replacement. I'm grateful but also frustrated because until this is resolved it is a safety issue. These devices should never fail by leaving the garage door open. If anything, if they fail it should result in the door staying closed.

**Possible fix**. I had the garage tech look into this issue. I have the new wall Wi-Fi opener. He reset the limits on the door so that the door is not as snugged to the ground. He states that these openers drop before they rise and this may fix the problem. I will report back to see if this works. Try it and tell me if it works for you. FYI he states he has a bunch of houses with the same problem. He has changed the opener, sensors, etc. he believes the back up battery may be the culprit.

The Known issue now is the wired inside Wall Remote, which is why they extended the Warranty on it, just ordered mine at N/C with coupon code from the link in one of their responses.

I just received my replacement today and installed it, if it acts up again I’ll post it here. So everyone knows, chamberlain just started offering up this solution a few weeks ago and the replacement is free. You do have to put your CC info during the order process but I was not charged anything at all. They did not question my warranty or anything to replace it. Tells me they know this is a big enough problem that they would rather replace anybody who asks for it to avoid a mass recall or potential liability. The new wall unit looks exactly the same, except they put a blue sticker to identify it. I’m guessing the internals are different and that may be the fix.

This stupid garage door opener has been doing this for years. Fed up! As a single mom I terrified every night and check it repeatedly. I am now “programmed” to wake up a few times a night to check if it’s open or not! Yep, I am searching at 1am on a work night cuz I woke up to it open for the second time tonight. Absolutely unacceptable.

** what is your IP address to your garage opener?**. I noticed mine was very generic ending in .1 so I changed it to a double digit. It hasn’t happened since. It’s only 48 hrs now, whereas, it would open every 12 hrs. Before.

Add me to the list as well. I got woke up at 2am with the alarm going off since my 8500 just opened up by itself. After rounding up all 3 dogs from all over the neighborhood, had to manually close the door because it was completely unresponsive. Now I'm reading that I'm far from the only one to have this happen and I'm WIDE AWAKE at 3 in the morning .
