Garage door open and close by itself

Bought a new Chamberlain garage door opener about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago with MyQ installed. Battery backup. Keypad. Nice unit, strong motor. Was pretty cool. Imagine my surprise when I woke up yesterday to a notice that my garage door opened and closed by itself while we were safely tucked in the house for the evening. A little further checking on the app and this has apparently been happening for quite some time and at all hours of the night. So I do a quick Google search and find out that this problem is not new, rather a couple years old at least and with no fix. No software update, patch - nothing. Except the age old check the wires or an occasional wire burnout on the wall switch - or the best one - your neighbors remote must have become programmed to it somehow. Well, isn't that a great one! That was a problem from like the 1970's, right? So I contact Chamberlain on Facebook to which I received a reply asking for contact info and they would have someone call me. Great! Just tell them not to tell me its my neighbors remote. Please don't insult me that way. So some 'tech' calls me and what does he do? You guessed it. So I said your really going to go there? Yep, he was. I told him although I would reprogram the remotes I wasn't buying the story and was concerned that they still haven't provided a fix for this after all this time. Conversation went on and he eventually told me to send it back to him and he would fully refund me what I paid. Really? Yep. Ok,send me an email with whatever details you need. Turns out this clown didn't even know who he was talking to. He had the name right but the wrong product. Told me I ordered a bridge or something off their website a two weeks ago. Um, sorry sir - no I didn't. I bought a garage door opener from Home Depot maybe two years ago and gave him the location. I don't think he believed me, but then said, sorry - I got the info from your forum post. You did? Hmm, interesting. I'll have to see if I can find that post. Anyway, he ended up telling me to reprogram my remotes and he would send me an email on how to do it. I said good, I'll let all my neighbors know they can't use their garade door openers while I reprogram because of this inferior product Chamberlain won't fix. After all, what other company can you think of that would get away with this, right? Then he said he won't send me the email because he's worried I'll post it all over my neighborhood - well the remotes are pretty strong so I would have to let most of my block know - so now I don't get any help from Chamberlain because this guy is inept and can't admit Chamberlain has a problem that they won't fix. He also says that since I'm such a forum expert that I should read all the forums so I would know that Chamberlain is the most secure opener out there. Based on what I see over and over on the various forums, I doubt that is the case. But he's Mr. Right and I'm sure he gets paid to say that. Too bad he doesn't get paid to say I'm sorry for the problem and we are working on a software fix since this is obviously somewhat widespread and we don't want our customers inconvenienced. But he didn't. He tows the line and spews the spew. Thanks for the vote of confidence and thank God I work from home where at least I have a chance at defending my place in the case of Chamberlain's door decidingtopen on its own and let anyone at my stuff. Good job Chamberlain! Now I know why so many other posts mentioned the terrible service - maybe they talked to this guy - who doesn't even know what product I have or where I bought it from - even though he said he was looking at my order on their website. Brilliant. On a side note - Chuck who monitors the Facebook seems pretty nice.

Eric, I'm very sorry about this. I want to help get this resolved for you. I'm not a certified tech support expert, but the pros I work with are suggesting you erase all the codes in your garage door opener and then reprogram your remote devices. Have you tried this already? Would it help if I sent some instructions on how to do this? Let me know how I can be of assistance. -Chuck

Hi Chuck, thanks for reaching out, yes, I will be reprogramming the remotes and I guess its a good thing I saved the owners manual since your tech doesn't want to send me the info. :) However, I can honestly tell you that I am very disappointed in Chamberlains ability to address this problem. I mean, really, what are the odds that someone on my block pressed the remote on their opener during the 30 second window my system was on 'learn?' It is NOT reassuring to read these posts over a couple of years and think that Chamberlain can't do a better job writing and programming - of course if the guy I spoke with yesterday is any indication of your tech department, then it does become fully understandable. Like I said, he had my name but didn't even know what product I had let alone that I did not buy it from your website - if you don't know what I have, how can you tell me how to fix it?  BUT, if you would like to know where to start? How about an apology for selling me an inferior product when it comes to the security it should provide. Then, follow it up with 'lets start by reprogramming the remotes even though in 2017 that shouldn't be a problem. If that doesn't fix it we will look into some other scenarios.' After that, Chamberlain could say something along the lines that we are aware of this problem and our tech team is busy looking for a solution - say a security patch or software update (like lots of companies do) so this doesn't continue to be a problem. How about giving me a little reassurance that my home and family are safe as far as the security your product should provide? And then Chamberlain could actually follow up with better software instead of letting this go for years with no end in site. I'm sorry if I sound funny about this - but think about it - we landed people on the moon in 1969. Ford makes a truck that will back up your trailer simply by you taking your hands off the steering wheel and 'pointing' with a knob on the dashboard. There are cars that drive themselves. I have a mobile phone in my pocket with a touch screen and can control my thermostat from anywhere in the world not to mention something so basic as a timer that controls my sprinkler system. I think Chamberlain can do much, much better. And your tech that contacted me yesterday is all the proof I need that you CAN do better. I would start by hiring some real programmers and techs and not these goofballs from Rent A Tech or wherever they come from. Sorry, I just don't think mediocre is good enough for the price I paid for this unit. There ARE other options in the market.

Hi Eric - good morning.  Thanks for taking the time to provide this update. I appreciate all of your feedback, and I'm sorry for your disappointment and that your experience with someone from tech support left you feeling frustrated.

Let me know if you have any further questions or comments, I'm happy to help in any way.

After a closer look at this, a PART of the problem is that your garage door opener doesn't know what time it is. Even though the wall switch displays the correct time and it is hooked to my home internet and a phone app, your budget tech folks haven't got them communicating the correct time to the opener. For example, my wife came home at 1pm (1259pm to be exact), yet your alert that the door is open says it opened at 459am. That is just a slight difference but far greater than the time zone differences from one side of the USA to the other, with perhaps the exception of Maine and Hawaii, I'll have to check. But I am in neither of those places and I doubt Chamberlain is either. When she left at 130pm, the alert tells me it opened at 532am. Now, I'm no tech guy, but I would think any college tech intern could figure out how to get the correct time to display. And that has nothing to do with my nieighbors accidentally getting my code - but, hey, what do I know. But it doesn't explain why when my wife left for work this morning that there is no alert for the door opening and closing. Lol, I could ask that guy who called me yesterday but he might think my wife just drove through the door then fixed it before I noticed a little while later. Point is, there is more to this than just your tech guys thumping their chests about this being a mistaken code problem from my neighbors openers. No doubt the odds of that happening are amazingly remote but that is there story and they are sticking to it. So, now we know the garage door doesn't know what time it is even though it is programmed in the wall remote, we know that it is reporting the door opens when it doesn't and we also know that it also apparently isn't reporting times when the door DID open. But I guess that is the fault of my neighbors remote controls and not of faulty tech programming and a lack of fixes. Good thing you have me here to help your tech guys do their jobs, huh?

I have a similar problem. While my app indicates my garage door opens and closes at random times of day and night, I have security cameras in my garage (for this exact reason) and when I check the camera, the garage door  is never open. The other day it kept indicating open/closed probably 13 times in a row and it wouldn't stop, so I shut off the notification in the app until I could get home from work. This has been a problem since I installed the devise a year ago and I never seem to find a resolution, as I guess Chamberlain hasn't figured this one out either. This creates stress for me especially when I am not at home. Glad I have the security camera (which I shouldn't have had to install)

I’ve thought for awhile now that Chamberlain’s software team seems completely inept. Maybe it’s not their fault though. Perhaps Chamberlain has tasked them solely with finding ways of sucking more money out of their customers, a la IFTTT and Google Home subscriptions.

It's been a few weeks now, still nothing from Chamberlain regarding the time, maybe that programming time is pretty difficult after all?

Hi Eric. Have you been able to erase all the codes in your garage door opener and then reprogram your remote devices? I can coordinate another call with customer support, but this will be the recommended next step. Let me know. Lauren

We just purchased a Chamberlain wireless key entry pad and have the same problem that the garage door is opening at random times. I just found this post researching the issue. I was hoping that reprogramming would solve the issue. If it does not, back to Lowe’s it goes.

Well you can reimburse me for the unit I purchased, or you can send me another one to have as a spare in case this one fails in another four years.

Been having this issue with my GD for awhile. Recently it has gone haywire and doing it at all hours. Purchased in June 2016. I am shocked to learn now April 2018 that this has been a recurring problem with Chamberlain GD products for many years! I feel i got ripped off by Home Depot! I will be escalating this HUGE oversight up the food chain of HD to remove Chamberlain from their offerings, so other customers avoid this nightmare scenarios and I will demand 100% of my Money Back and FREE REPLACEMENT with an ALTERNATIVE PRODUCT! A REAL FRAUD has been perpetrated on me and my Household is now being exposed to potential intruders at any given moment of the day or worse night! This is interfering with my quality of life because, even though at least my dog barks when the GD opens, the barking wakes me up. I am a sensitive sleeper and once awake, often find it difficult to fall back asleep. So much for the leisures of automation!
Anyone know of a really good LAWYER?!

O Suarez, there are a few causes for a garage door activating on its own. If you wish to troubleshoot this issue, we suggest this guide as a place to start: https://bit.ly/2HLQm1S. Let us know if that helps or if you require further assistance. Thanks, Chuck

After trying all the suggestions, mine turned out to be the very typical issue with the wired switch/light button; they were obviously flawed in either design or production. After having removed the wired button, never another ghost opening.....

I was alerted twice this morning that the garage door opened and closed. As I am not close to my house today, I had my wife check to make sure everything was ok. As others on this site mentioned, this is a serious security breach. Before I request a full refund, Chamberlain, have you identified a legitimate fix for this issue?

Mine installed new two months ago and now it is doing the phantom operations. One morning I woke up shocking to find out that the garage door was opened all night. I check all doors and the garage door closed before go to bed every night. We do not feel safe these days. I have followered the instructions to clear all memories on the main unit and reprogram everything but not solving the problem. Now I have removed the wall control unit and see what will happen.
On the side note, how do I change the app alert sound on an iPhone to a more annoying sound to alert me, now it only gives two "ding ding" alert sound?

Thanks Peter. I reset my garage door opener as well - and that did not fix the issue. However, I reset my Homelink of my car and reset  the garage door opener again - waiting to see how the door reacts! Thanks for your info though.

Even after I removed the wall control unit, it still opened twice. I reinalled the wall control unit, then reset and reprogrammed the main unit, it have been 3 weeks since it has not opened itself yet. On the other hand, i also installed a Wi-Fi plug for the main unit to turn off the power if I left the house longer then one day. Can only hope for the best.

As of Nov 2018, not only does our garage door open randomly, but today it closed a few seconds after my wife pulled in.  That is very dangerous indeed.  This is a unit in a new house, the previous people in the house never even lived there so the GD has really never been used.

The first time it randomly opened, I reprogrammed the opener, verified my remotes didn't work, then reprogrammed the remotes.  All seemed ok, but then today it did the random close trick.

When I cleared all the codes after it initially randomly opened, will that also make sure if someone previously had it on their myQ app, would it have also disabled the app from opening/closing the GD?

Because I cleared the codes and reprogrammed everything, I'm guessing this unit purchased in Sept of 2017 still has a safety issue, especially when it closed on it's own.

Chamberlin...any feedback from you?
