Charging for IFTTT is outrageous

I recently bought my families first home and have been using IFTTT to connect the various systems which everything uses so far (lights, nest protect, therm). I recently saw a Chamberlain MyQ garage door opener which could connect to the internet and even though I had a working, older model opener, I excitedly bought one. I'd done research months ago and heard assurances that IFTTT support was coming soon.

Lo and behold it's here - for a monthly fee. Really? That's not only completely against the spirit of IFTTT (which it about openly connecting devices, the service provides so much and charges nothing) but it's insulting to customers who have invested in your products based on promises of support.

I'm frustrated beyond belief. If I had known there would be a monthly fee I would have never purchased this garage door opener at all and probably modded another with a wifi device.

Extremely disappointed with my first Chamberlain purchase. The first "smart home device" I wish I had never bought.  I see other people on here with the same complaints - I'm going to see how Chamberlain responds to the feedback, but pending a rollback of this money-grab policy I'll likely never buy another one of their products again. I feel like I've been scammed.

Tom, we sincerely appreciate this feedback. We're sharing your perspective and that of other members of the MyQ Community with Chamberlain's leadership. I promise to keep you posted on any updates regarding the subscription service. Lauren

i think i can speak for everyone when i say that is a load of BS. not only do you piss off every customer that buys your product but what do you think we do when we show off our new smart garage door. Well, we tell them not to buy yours of course. just like everyone else here even if you fix the BS charge i wont ever buy a product from you again. i hope your company goes under and you all lose your jobs.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I think it's reasonable to allow you an opportunity to correct this - I'm holding off being conclusively angry about this policy while you take time to review the feedback the community has been giving you about it.

There is currently a LOT of feedback. Hopefully Chamberlain will do the right thing and enable IFTTT access without a subscription charge.

They've still got the opportunity to correct this, but it's a small window. It'll be clear very quickly if they plan to take corrective action to change this model (no one expects any company to be perfect and will give credit if there's a timely response). I'd encourage leadership to swiftly adjust the plan though, the smart home market won't wait long for you to realize you've made a mistake.

A subscription model for a home appliance is just the ABSOLUTE worst model - I can't communicate clearly enough what a mistake you're making with that plan. If I were at Chamberlain I'd be rushing to get ahead of this before it becomes mainstream news and they find themselves a pirarah for the entire smart home market. At that point they won't have the luxury of rolling back without having already brutally damaged their market standing and public image.

I'm your customer - I want to see you succeed. Your product is important to me, please take this feedback seriously.

In case you were curious how much Corporate cared about our complaints, here's your answer. They don't, or more specifically, not enough to take any sort of meaningful action.

Guys/gals - in addition to complaining here, go and rating everything you own one star.  Especially their apps and garage openers.  It's one way to send a message.

Just installed my opener yesterday. Have to say I’m pretty surprised at the additional hardware needed for Apple HomeKit and subscription fee for IFTTT. This should all be easily included with the product. Is the cost that high to mainatian tjis Service you need to charge?

Charlie, thanks for your comments. Are you using HomeKt and IFTTT? What do you think so far? Lauren

Lauren, just answer the question on why your greedy company has to charge a subscription to an otherwise free service. Remember when flat screen tv's came out and you just waited and hoped for a reason to pitch your tube tv? That's what's happening now with my GDO. Chamberlain / Liftmaster / and whatever other unethical companies you're related to are shameful.

I was thinking getting a 2nd Chamberlain garage opener and was surprised finding out that there's a fee charge on the integration.  I'll just look into other option instead of installing another Chamberlain made product line.  Maybe I'll take my old Chamberlain down at the same time.  So disappointed of the unethical false advertisement.

Hi gMouse m, we understand not everyone will want to subscribe to our third-party integrations. Note that the subscription fees only apply to users who want added functionality from the IFTTT and Google Home integrations. Chuck

So if you want to use IFTTT to turn on a simple light when the GDO opens the door you have to pay for the privilege.  I can create a recipe to turn on lights at sunset or turn off lights if my NEST thermostat senses that I'm away and do all that for free but Chamberlain thinks I need to pay ransom money to turn on a light if I open the damn door.  GREED

But then why would you call it smart garage door opener, when it's not. Why do i have to pay ransom money to make it a smart. That's totally false advertising.

I bought a Gogogate2.  Integrates with IFTTT.  No payment necessary. Instructions for setup are lacking but got it working.  Not compatible with newer openers but works good for old style that just use a simple normally open contact for the button.

Hello everyone, it's been a while. I still have my Myq GDO and there is a way to automate your door any way you want with IFTTT WITHOUT THE BS SUBSCRIPTION. I can use voice with Google assistant, Amazon echo to open / close my door with no issues. You still get alerts from Chamberlain app but I wish they would make it possible to have a custom alert sound. I've only been asking for 3 years. I guess it makes too much sense for the geniuses who develop the app for Chamberlain to include this feature.

Hi Dennis James,

How do you use IFTTT with Chamberlain MyQ without subscription?  If you use Android app, then you can use this app to make custom alert sound for any app.  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=notificon.gsy.com.notificon
