Carplay compatibility?

It would be awesome if you guys can develop an app for Apple Carplay. Nothing fancy, just to open and close the garage door. It really makes sense as more and more cars supports carplay/android auto and to have the garage door controls right at the dash.

I have been asking for this for a couple years now. Latest update to the app added Apple watch so that's a start if you have an Apple Watch. I want HomeKit first though cause then I could just say "Het Siri open my garage door" as I drive up to the house. CarPlay would most definitely be welcomed though

..... And Android Auto for us Android users....  Agree, home automation integration, like HomeKit, should be a priority as well.

This sounds like a good suggestion. Having said that, what car has Carplay but not buttons on the back mirror (or somewhere else) to open at least 2 if not more garage doors? It seems to me those buttons are more convenient and they leave more room on the LCD for other stuff.

I also agree with Michael and Mark that while this is nice to have, integration with home automation systems should have higher priority. IFTTT PLEASE!!!!

2018 Volkswagen Golf AllTrack SEL also doesn't have HomeLink built-in to the mirror. And there's not a Volkswagen option for it because of rain-sensing and cameras.

Most cars do have this capability but I actually thought about this when I was renting a car since I didn’t want to program the homelink one to my garage door and have to remove it later. Also my 2 Ford cars allow you to open and close the door even with the car off so there’s a slight security risk. My Mercedes only worked of the car was on.

With Apple locking the lighting port now with iOS 12 which requires the passcode to allow a USB device to see the phone (it’s also able to be disabled) it would be nice if Apple opened its HomeKit up to CarPlay for certain things. But a geofence also works and I have had so very few issues with it I ditched my clicker remote to the console of my car so my wife can use it when she’s drives my car.

My 2017 F150 (at almost $60,000 doesn't have it) and my wifes 2016 Escape Titanium does, but the homelink seems to fail 98% of the time if you are not right next to the garage door...

My new Honda Civic has CarPlay but no buttons on the mirror. As more non-luxury cars add CarPlay/Android Auto, there will be more cars where adding this makes sense. I can't believe this would take an inordinate amount of resources to build an app to accomplish this and am surprised it hasn't happened yet.

My Chevy Bolt has the same problem. Chevy has removed homelink button support from their cars now. As Jarad rightly pointed out, more auto manufacturers will be headed in this direction. I think adding app suport for CarPlay/Android Audio is a must at this point.

Only problem is Apple has to allow it for CarPlay which is very slowly opening up to devs. This fall we can finally use Waze or Google maps instead of Apple maps. Maybe by iOS 13 we can have HomeKit features like the opening and closing of a garage door baked into CarPlay

Really, the new iOS update will allow us to use Waze as navigation on the cars in dash display! That is something to look forward to!

Yeah Apple announced 3rd party maps for CarPlay this fall. Of course those map apps need to be updated to support CarPlay but google maps and waze (owned by google) were announced for the iOS 12 update presumably being released early September

This update will install on devices up to 5 years old (try that with a Samsung phone haha) and should double the speed of any device on ios11 right now.

I’m using it and on beta 4 right now it’s a lot more stable than the previous betas.

I have been asking them for three years. It's not in their roadmap. And the only reason I continue to have to keep my garage door opener in my car.

I hope they do decide to move on this, seems like it would be little effort as it uses the phone to send the actual command. Fingers crossed!

Apple does not provide this sort of integration for CarPlay apps. They are limited to only audio and playlist control. There is nothing Chamberlain can do here.

But while it is not an app, the finally-available HomeKit integration allows you to use Siri via CarPlay.

Ok its time for carplay. I should be able to say "hey siri open my garage door" without having to unplug my phone from my truck.

I want that too but Apple isn’t allowing HomeKit accessories into CarPlay yet. Maybe with iOS 12 ???

You don’t have to unplug it for hey siri to work with it. It just needs to be unlocked. So a quick finger print or face scan then the hey Siri open my garage door works just fine. I tend to use my Apple Watch though as I open it about a block away cause sometimes it takes a bit for the door to start opening

Apple does not currently provide this kind of functionality in CarPlay apps. They are limited to basic audio and playlist navigation.

Got a work around in place

Find a HomeKit accessory in your home like a light or plug and assign an automation to it. I called mine “I’m Home” that turns this light or switch on

Then create an automation that when this switch turns on open the garage door, wait two minutes and turn switch off then close door

I have a geofence set up too that opens turns the switch on as well so my door is open when I get to the garage. Works well

I walk into the house and the two minute timer is up and the door closes itself
