Alexa integration

Alexa integration: It would be nice if Alexa could tell us when a garage door is open. I understand security is a issue that must be dealt with but there must be a way you can build a "Skills" for Alexa that would help a homeowner have a greater awareness of the garage door status.

This should be a simple task for Chamberlain to integrate Alexa into MyQ. The Alexa Voice Service (AVS) API Is open to developers to add to their products. Come on Chamberlain! Please consider doing this for MyQ.

Hello, I have just enabled my Alexa to open my garage door, it was alot of development and i would not expect eveyone to be able to do it because it is alot of configurations with Amazon. This type of add on should be part of the MyQ package to keep their customers and create more. Home automation is a big topic now.

Come on MyQ, it's already about time to add this to Amazon Echo/Alexa!  You are going to begin to lose customers if this is not done soon enough.  It's been over a year, this should have been done already!!!

So far, my entire experience with Chamberlain products has been negative. The opener Wifi setup instructions don't match actual procedure, and it's been a real PITA to get it working with the Android app. I even had to upgrade my phone from Andoid 5 because the app was not backward compatible and now I find that there WAS and Alexa skill, but that greedy owner, Joel Chamberlain, had it removed.

I'm calling up the garage door company I bout this from last month to see if I can get get the Chamberlame Liftmaster removed and buy something else.

Pigheadedness doesn't sell. Now we'll have some boilerplate commentary from our forum manager and Chamberlame employee.

Echo, Google, Apple all have something that we can literally communicate with to control our home. The future is here and home security is essential in this day and age. A couple of weeks ago I walked into my garage to find one of the doors going up and down all by itself!! I had a malfunctioning wall control unit, two as it turned out. This could have been tragic had I not been home. Wide open for any thief to walk right in and help themselves. Had the system been monitored by a high level computer such as Echo, it could have actually warned me of the situation. I have a Chamberlain unit designed to warn me but don't use it because it annoys my wife when I'm operating the doors for my shop.
"Alexa... please open the east shop door"... time to go to bed? "Alexa... are all of the doors secure?" ... Nice...
Chamberlain, we all love your products or we wouldn't be asking for more advanced features and options.

I just replaced my old Chamberlain with a new one with Wifi and would like also to use it with Alexa.  Am disappointed that Chamberlain isn't compatible. Please hurry and upgrade your software, Chamberlain.  As the others have said, the world is passing you by.

Well a statement like the one above suggests we should spend a few thousand more on new hardware devices, rather than the simple obvious of upgrading the app. No new technology actually required. Considering I just installed 2 new doors and systems, and it has worked great the past 6 months warning me when the door is open, it's crazy with now 3 major modern smart home device systems that chamberlain would have essentially stopped innovating. Such a small step.

Agreed. I really don't think we should have to buy all new light switches and garage door openers to get this functionality. If that's the case - I'm buying from another company. No question.

Joel Chamberlain put in a complaint to Amazon and had the fully functional skill pulled. The understood conclusion from the community is that this was done because they weren't making a dime off it and are trying to come up with a way to monetize Echo integration.

Are you kidding?  We can get into ethical business practices, but let's be real.  If you're nickel and diming your customers after they've already bought 2 of your rather pricey products (because they don't already integrate with better existing technologies ie. zwave), that's not simply "making money".  That's greed.

Well, they sold a new hub to promote HomeKit for apple and have required subscriptions to use Google Home, so the only natural thing for them to do at this point is sell a new hub for Alexa and charge for that as well. It's a very masochistic business model called "Let's turn off consumers."

IT is just a Amazon skill that works for garage doors and lights. I have tried it and it works.
It does require pin code for security but still handy.
For e.g. You say Alexa, "ask Myq to open garage door pin 1234" and it opens

Hello all,

I'm the said developer of the MyQ Home Alexa skill that Andy has mentioned. A lot of you were using the smart home version of this skill a couple weeks back (called MyQ Smart Home), but Amazon notified me that opening garage doors without a pin was not allowed. Since smart home skills do not have pin support, I have disabled that feature on MyQ Smart Home and created MyQ Home so that users still have a way of opening their garage doors. I'm currently working with Amazon to get these two skills certified and made public as soon as possible.

If you want beta invites, email me at thomas@thomasmunduchira.com with the email that your Alexa device is registered on and tell me if you want access to MyQ Home, MyQ Smart Home, or both. The beta will only last 90 days, by which point I'll hopefully have the skills public for everyone to use.

Dear Canned response "community manager official rep",

You can let your "hard working developers" know that while they were tirelessly developing a skill that's already been developed, the customers of your products are considering alternative options to Chamberlain/Liftmaster as a physical garage door opener due to your shady practices and completely lack of appearance to a market that's asking for basic functionality that should be fairly simple to implement.

Sincerly,

Everyone with an Amazon Echo.

I own plenty of Chamberlain products. I like them so much that I even have another MyQ garage door opener being shipped to me from Amazon as I write this comment. I like the MyQ opener's features (motion sensor lights, auto closing at 9 pm, remote control via the android app) and price point (especially from Amazon Warehouse Deals). But...I also want to check the status of my garage doors with my Amazon Echo (Alexa). If you are tired of waiting on Chamberlain, here are a couple alternatives I found in an article on thewirecutter dot com (this article was originally written sometime in late 2016, and was last updated on Oct 13, 2017):

- "The Ohio-born, Kickstarter-grown Garageio...has the... only direct integration with Amazon’s Echo (which means you can also ask Alexa if your door is open or closed)"

- "If you’re shopping for a whole new garage-door opener...Linear offers a smart opener that works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT..."

I also found an article that offers a way to control MyQ from Alexa using OpenHUB and IFTTT, but the setup procedure is far to intense for me. And I consider myself very tech savvy.

However, for me, I will certainly email Thomas Munduchira for his original MyQ skill, and see if it can work for me.

Cheers

To all who have used or are beta testing the Alexa skills I developed:

These Alexa skills that were recently created to work with MyQ devices have not been approved through Chamberlain’s partnership process. I am working with the appropriate teams to secure the proper approval and agreement. At this time, I will need to disable these skills until the partnership has been formally approved.

Chamberlain does have several approved partnerships including IFTTT and Google Assistant that can be found in the MyQ app by selecting Menu > Account > Account Linking.

Hey Gary. I'm with you on that idea.  Besides screwing us on Alexa integration their battery backup system stinks.  Mine worked once and the second time I needed it it was dead.  No warning or anything, system tells me battery is charged and working.  Ha Ha!

Good call on disabling this skill.  Totally seems like it's a threat to your business as you've obviously developed your own skill to do this.  Oh wait, no you haven't.  You've done nothing.  Nice Job.  Canned response from Chamberlain in 3.....2.....1...

They don't care if you go or stay they make plenty of money and care less about if we want Alexa integration or not. I was using 3rd party created Alexa skill and now they blocked my account from being accessed from that skill.
They don't care. All they care about is how to make more money.

This is terrible they should allow people to use it on a temporary basis . I thought it was gonna be for 90 days at least . I spent a lot of good money on accessories from Chamberlain . Including a very expensive garage door opener . I want to be able to do was open with today's technology . This really stinks .

I've contacted Chamberlain, and what's sad is they don't care about what the customers want. They told me on the phone that they don't plan to integrate with wink, or Alexa. Why have a smart garage door opener, if it's going to be non compatible with your smart home? All of the other manufacturers are coming on board. Come on Chamberlain, grow up and get with the times. I already had to replace a logic board and the unit is less than 3 years old. I guess just the quality shows how far you're willing to go for the customer.

Lauren - You should clarify; Chamberlain integrates with Wink if you want to be able to manually open/close the door using the Wink app instead of using the chamberlain app.  It adds literally no additional functionality (location based automation or anything).  The only reason you'd ever want to do this is if you really liked doing everything from within the Wink App instead of the Chamberlain app.  It makes no sense at all.

That said, AGAIN you guys miss the entire point.  The sole reason you should integrate with other products is so that those products can add value to your product.  Outside of that (looking at your Wink integration) it is almost entirely pointless.

I just built a house last year and am happy to report that one of my liftmaster openers has a bad motor (I guess this is very unusual).  Anyway, my builder has agreed to have the opener replaced by another liftmaster or another brand of equivalent price.  Hooray for me!!!  Now, here's to hoping the other fails while still in under home warranty!
